So, what does it say about the current state of film that the most touching, intelligent, and witty films come from the animation studio Pixar? The studio's followup to last year's WALL*E (the best film of last year, the Oscars and everything else be hanged), UP is a bittersweet, exciting, and subtle road trip.
The animation is dazzling, of course (the rare bird our heroes and villain are looking for is wonderful), but the Pixar people know that story and character are what make movies work. And in their films, the technology is always at the service of the characters and the story. Like WALL*E, the first part of UP is silent except for music. It's an extraordinary depiction of a marriage between two matched souls, and it's heartbreaking. The rest of the movie--although wonderful--never quite reaches the heights of the filmmaking of this sequence. I hope that Pixar eventually has the courage to make a silent film.
By the way, there's a very funny short before the film, so don't be late.
