I knew he had cancer, but I was totally blindsided by reading this on Yahoo. I never even saw "Dirty Dancing" and was never passionate about "Ghost," but dammit, that man was an icon! Practically an institution! And now he's gone. What's the world coming to? Patrick Swayze, people! I'm ready for 2009 to be over.
Anyway, post your own remarks here.

So sad. I knew he was sick, but when he did his series, "The Beast," I assumed that he was in remission. A very brave, nice guy.
Classic "Saturday Night Live" skit - when he's auditioning as a Chippendale's dancer with Chris Farley. Just hilarious.

I've been a fan since I was a kid. I first saw him in The Outsiders (based on Susie Hinton's book). He played Darryl, the oldest brother. Couple of "brat pack" movies under his belt (Red Dawn anyone?) before he did that wonderful muscle-bound turn in Roadhouse. He kicked butt again in Next of Kin. Dirty Dancing and Ghost are two of my favorites. I saw both in the theater when they first came out. My sister and I even went to see the re-release of Dirty Dancing when it came back to the theaters. I never did watch all of Point Break, but oh my...eye candy galore! Between Patrick and Keanu Reeves...what's a girl to do?!
I knew the odds were stacked against him, but in recent months he seemed to be rallying. I was really hoping he'd make it.
RIP dear Patrick and know you will be missed!

I loved DIRTY DANCING. It's the ultimate chick flick, I suppose, but Mr. Swayze's acting and dancing abilities made this film work. I always enjoyed watching him even in some not so good films. His obituary in the LA TIMES suggests he might have been too good and decent a man to have become a huge star, but that that never seemed to bother him.

"Nobody puts Baby in a corner" Every time I hear him utter that line I just swoon. Now this is a death that really affects me. I had it very bad for Mr. Swayze in my younger days.

I'm too young to have experienced the "hype" around Dirty Dancing, but my sister loved it. Of course I saw it years later, and as Patcat said, it's the ultimate chick flick!
Ghost will always stand out to me for his wonderful performance, and I loved him in North and South.

Oh geez! Thanks, Tjara, for reminding me about North and South. I don't know how I could've forgotten to mention it! The one time that my entire family gathered around the TV every single night. We watched every bit of that mini-series together when it was on TV back in the 80's. He was wonderful in that!
