Well, after realizing that my TV Guide subscription wasn't going to include the 20th anniversary Law & Order edition, I finally found one lone copy in my local CVS. Pretty thin for $6.99, but I bought it.
So glad I did! Chock full of all sorts of great info. A heartfelt article of appreciation from Matt Rousch, who's a big fan of the series. A light but interesting article on Rene Balcer (L&O's MVP) which mentions the season premier and how much he likes writing for the new actors (and Sam Waterston, of course).
In a special spin-off section, a page on LOCI. In light of what has happened to the show, I found this description of the show especially sad:
Criminal Intent went far afield from the original ensemble ethic by centering its procedural action on the work of a single detective - more quirky than sexy, more genius than Everyman: Major Case Squad Detective Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio).......
And excerpted from a quote from Mr. Balcer......"Helping to keep the mad genius grounded was Kathryn Erbe's Alexandra Eames, the Watson to Goren's Holmes."
What I was surprised to read in the article is that Jeff Goldblum was Rene Balcer's choice all along, but Jeff was busy at the time shooting "Raines." Another quote from Rene Balcer, when discussing how courtroom scenes were removed and 7 minutes of running time as well for more ads...."We found that the investigation and the psychological play by Goren was really what the show was about."
This article makes me wonder how Mr. Balcer feels about all of this? Is he upset that the beloved characters he developed will now be gone? And if so, is it comforting to him that it is Goldblum who is taking over?
