I thought NBC was trying to get out of it's contract with Dick Wolf? Now they want another show from him? What gives?

Looks like NBC is trying to dump Conan because he said no to the late night time slot. And are trying to move Leno back to his old timeslot and take back his old show. EW Conan vs Leno"It seems likely that Leno will end up returning to The Tonight Show, where he earned the title of the King of Late Night, while O’Brien’s representatives will negotiate a settlement for the 46-year-old comedian to leave the network. It also seems certain that the settlement will involve some sort of compromise that prevents O’Brien from immediately jumping to the competition." There's a campaign already going for Conan.

It seems some reporters are trying to turn this into a class war, with Leno the working class guy, and Conan the Harvard grad (although I've the impression Conan came from a middle class family and got into Harvard on a scholarship, but that's just an impression).
What's funny is a very personal thing, and I haven't found Leno funny for many years. I think he and his manager at the time stole THE TONIGHT SHOW from David Letterman (although Letterman's passive-aggressive stance didn't help him). And Leno crossed a line with me during the OJ Simpson trial. I've a pretty bleak and black sense of humor--I love Monty Python and THE SIMPSONS--but I came to feel Leno was trying to profit from the deaths of two people. And Leno has always seemed to be too much of the establishment to be really funny.
I've not seen a lot of Conan O'Brien. He was just on too late for me to be a regular viewer. But I laughed a lot every time I saw him. I gather some NBC executives are saying that he wouldn't change his show for the earlier time slot. Well, if they didn't want Conan to be Conan, why did they move him? If they wanted Leno there, they should've kept him there.
Anyway, I don't watch anything on NBC these days, and the only thing I see myself watching in the future is some of the Winter Olympics. The current management team will have to be gone or a really great show produced before I return to NBC.

I like Leno. He had every right to go after the Tonight Show and doesn't deserve the crap he is getting now.

Patcat, I'm in the same boat as you in regards to Leno's so-called "humor." I mean, to each their own when it comes to comedy, truly, it's a very personal thing. I have always found Leno to just be terribly un-funny with a really cloying and phoney "average guy" schtick slathered on top. I can enjoy some *very* rough humor, but he has never ever been funny to me, just very quick to make the easy/insensitive joke. Every time a pretty woman is on your set, you don't HAVE to work in a lame and crude boner joke. If you can't tell, I'm with Coco Loved him since he came on when I was in highschool. I think he has been fantastic through all this unfair mess and I'm quite certain he's going to land on his feet. I'm really looking forward to seeing where he ends up come September when he can have a show again. NBC and Leno deserve each other. The ONLY remote upside to this debacle is that they'll be so desperate for material to fill prime time that a pilot I'm curious about might have a better chance of being actually made. Though at this point I think a pilot winning a slot on NBC might be more of a curse than a blessing.

tvtattle.com/A hilarious parody of how Ken Burns would handle THE LATE NIGHT WARS, courtesy of Jimmy Kimmel. I've only seen bits and pieces of Kimmel's show, and haven't beent tempted to watch it. But if he and his staff can do things like this, I may need to start. Patcat

Thanks for the link to the video Patcat. I LOL at President Jeff Zucker on the outhouse seat, which is where he belongs.
Random thoughts: ---At least NBC is getting really good at something--driving away their top notch talent, all in the interests of saving money. I see their new motto is "More Colorful"--as in The Color of Money. ---As for NBC saving money, in addition to the $45 million payout to Conan and his staff, there's also the matter of the $50 million it cost to build the new Tonight Show set. There is now a third item to add to the certainties in life--there's death, taxes, and the unending and unrelenting stupidity and myopia of NBC executives.
