I was having lunch with some friends during the hockey game, and it was on about half of the big screen TVs in the place. The other half showed the Purdue/Michigan State basketball game, and since this was in Indianapolis, having half of the screens on a hockey game was a big deal. And people were watching it. There was a gasp and a cheer when the Americans tied the game, but no one seemed terribly upset at the US loss.

Patcat, that's great that half the TVs tuned in to the gold medal hockey game, considering you're in the heart of basketball country. I wasn't upset at all about the USA "loss" because I didn't consider it as such. Team USA was considered a dark horse in the Olympics tournament at the outset, and none of the so-called "experts" predicted they would even make it to the medal round, much less win a silver medal. Whoever said "You don't win silver, you lose gold" is totally WRONG. Silver medals are nothing to be ashamed of--just ask Johnnie Spillane of Team USA's Nordic Combined team.

Brian Orser won two silver medals, one in 1984 (Scott Hamilton won the gold), and in 1988 (Brian Boitano won the "Battle of the Brians"). It took him a long time to realize he'd won the silver. He's now a skating coach, and since he coached the young woman who won the ladies' competition, he's doing well.
I was very pleased to see the US goalie at the closing ceremonies weaing his silver medal. He was very disappointed when he was interviewed right after the game, but he seemed very happy during the ceremonies. I understand he's very good at what he does.

Patcat, USA goalie Ryan Miller is very very good at what he does. Despite the loss in the gold medal game, he was named MVP of the Olympics tournament. He's also the #1 reason the Buffalo Sabres are, at least as of today, in solid NHL Stanley Cup playoffs position. During last night's Penguins/Sabres game in Pittsburgh, Miller got a louder and more sustained standing ovation than Sidney Crosby did for the home team Pens. The fans recognized and acknowledged Miller's stellar play that carried Team USA to the gold medal game.

I am more annoyed at the so-called scandals of the Olympics. Lesbians drinking on the ice instead of the locker room? Oohhh, I am so offended! Provocative poses with a medal from a nineteen yr-old?? Say it ain't so! I wonder how we ever crossed the Atlantic sometimes..

LOL at Letterman's Top 10 list. Next up for Evan Lysackek: a stint on ABC's Dancing With the Stars.
BTW, EL has been dating gymnast Nastia Liukin who everyone should recall won the women's all-around gold medal in Beijing in 2008. I suspect EL's and NL's post-games de-briefings have been...memorable. Perfect 10s for this gold medal couple. ;D

EL was dating Tanith Belbin, who, with Ben Agosto, won the Silver Medal in Ice Dancing in Turino in 2006. Belbin and Agosto finished Fourth in Vancouver. Belbin is now dating Charlie White, who's one half of the US team that won Silver in Ice dancing, and she was sharing a suite in the Olympic Village with Johnny Weir. (And if you haven't heard of Johnny Weir, where have you been for the last two weeks?(g)). Welcome to AS THE SKATE TURNS (g). Still, all of these people did well in the Olympics, and Lysachek and Liukin look very happy together.
There are reports that the helmet and hockey stick Sydney Crosby wore and used during the Gold Medal game are missing.

According to the NY Times one of Crosby's gloves has been found. The other glove, plus his stick and game-winning puck, are still MIA. Maybe we'll see them offered on eBay soon.
About Johnny Weir: it would probably have raised more eyebrows if he shared a suite with Evan Lysacek and/or Charlie White.
USA goalie Ryan White got another standing O last night, this time in Buffalo. The Washington Capitals, however, won the game. Mrs. T was very much conflicted on this outcome.

Sidney Crosby's other glove has been found, as well as the hockey stick. The glove ended up being placed in another player's bag; the hockey stick in a shipping container bound for Russia, but it was intercepted in Toronto.
