Will air 3pm(EST) October 18 on the USA Network. First aired January 29, 2008. Fifteenth episode of Season Seven.
Written by Marygrace O’Shea and Warren Leight. Directed by Kevin Bray
Guest Actors:
Jessica Walter as Eleanor Reynolds
Sarah Jane Morris as Marla Reynolds
Andrew William Smith as Kevin Reynolds
Synopsis: Eames and Goren track a killer who shoots parents in front of their toddlers.
Quotes:
Eames: “A Wall Street guy out with his kid in the park on a weeknight. Isn’t that why they have nannies?”
Eames: “Right now, it looks like your wait list is a hit list.”
Ross: “What the hell are we dealing with here? Son of Sam killing parents in front of kids?”
Eames (writing ad for Goren): “I’ll make sure you’re his type.”
Man (to Goren): “Are you Bigfoot?”
Marla: “I thought you were my friend.”
Goren: “They had kids too.”
Note—Check out the names of the children on the blackboard.
Queries:
In spite of (perhaps because) many people felt this episode was a rehash of earlier, better LOCI stories, fifteen pages of discussion originally appeared about PLEASE NOTE…Much of it veered far away from the episode to lively discussions of Vincent D’Onofrio’s performance and the changing state and quality of the writing for LOCI. Perhaps there wasn’t that much to say about the episode, but that’s never stopped me before!
Was Marla a good mother? Would she have become a killer if her mother-in-law wasn’t around?
Does Kevin know how troubled Marla is? Is he to blame for what happens?
How did Marla and Kevin meet? Why didn’t Eleanor stop the marriage?
Do the victims get lost in this story?
Some queries about Goren’s sexuality. Is it possible that he’s bisexual, or at least had one or two homosexual encounters? Is he upset that he’s the bait in this episode? Does Eames enjoy setting him up as the bait a little too much (this is a half tongue in cheek question, by the way)?
What is the state of the Eames/Goren relationship in this episode?
Again, we have a conclusion where Goren must talk down an angry, unstable, perp with a gun. How does this compare to past situations like this? Did he and Eames expect to find Marla doing this? Should they?
In the original discussion, there was some comment about why Eames took care of the children and Goren moved to speak with Marla. I’d like to revisit this. Did this make sense? Is this something Goren and Eames have discussed?
What will happen to Henry?
Comments: Perhaps I was just happy to get a relatively angst free story when I first saw this, but I think I might have liked it a bit more than a lot of people. I found the ending very compelling. I don’t believe Marla was as complicated or dangerous as the father in PHANTOM or the policeman in SIREN CALL, but the presence of the children and teachers added to the tension here. I liked the calm, almost matter of fact way, Goren informed Eames of the situation and his handling of Marla.
Submitted, as always, for your consideration, comments and criticisms.
