In the episode discussion of Loyalty Part 2, techguy spoke eloquently of the nihilistic feel of that ending for Goren and Eames, and how detached he felt watching it. I felt exactly the same - heck, I was so detached I didn't watch Loyalty Part 2 until a few months ago...
So, for Season 10, all I REALLY want is an ending that is completely different from what we saw in Loyalty. I don't want a Pollyanna season and ending; I don't want white picket fences, everyone happy all the time, all the loose ends tied up and all that. That wouldn't be true to CI for me. What I do want is an ending that shows G/E in a good place in their lives. What "good" means for each character? I don't know. For Goren, I think at this point I'd be happy with him doing something meaningful work-wise and at least having some peace with his past. For Eames? I honestly don't know.
I would like a season with some really good cases; a victory lap, if you will, for G/E. And just for my purely sentimental self, at least one appearance each by Deakins and Carver. I think the best way to gather this core four would be the re-opening of one of their old cases.
And I want Nicole Wallace to stay dead.

I agree, but I want Nicole Wallace to mysteriously found alive.

I agree, but I want Nicole Wallace to mysteriously found alive. Well IF she returns I hope EAMES takes her out! No one messes with HER man! Cat fight! Rowl!!! Umm. Even though I'm a shipper I hope y'all know this is my attempt at humor! Seriously, I thought the show ALMOST "jumped the shark" when MFB's affair with Frances and his being Goren's biological father was revealed. Nicole returning would complete that leap IMO. However, as long as Bobby and Alex are still there, I'll continue to watch! Maybe Ross could return too! After all, the FBI didn't let Liz examine him. Maybe they faked his death so he could go undercover or in Witness Protection!

Nicole is dead. Ross is dead. Only way they come back is if the last two seasons were a dream, or Bobby suffered a psychotic break and hallucinated them.

I could get on board with the past two seasons being a dream, lol, but please God, no psychotic breaks for Bobby.

Please, no Dallas-like dream for CI's Bobby, no Nicole resurrection from the dead. If CI goes all gimmicky for Season 10 and does an Orwellian 1984 re-write of history, I'm out the door. Let sleeping Nicole dogs lie--and stay DEAD!

Oh but I love her! It seems unfitting that some old man could take her out.

I hope I'm not being too cynical, but I doubt that the new showrunner is going to bother wrapping up loose ends left by his predecessors. He'll have to address the Eames/quitting and Goren/fired ending in "Loyalty," but I don't expect anything more than one brief scene and a few lines. And then back to the crime at hand. I agree and especially as it's only eight episodes.

Oh but I love her! It seems unfitting that some old man could take her out. Exactly - and especially as she was the best "villain" in the series.

This might be off topic, but reading the comments about Nicole a day dream came to my mind: Nicole has an older daughter (older than the one found in Australia's beach). She gets to know Goren or someone from MC (or any Law and Order series) when looking for her mother (finding her through all these personalities). This character can be villain like her mother or good, any way, she will puzzle Goren and Eames as much as her mother did.... Well, that is just a dream...

Moonbeam, I agree with DonnaJo. Your scenario for Goren and Eames is spot on perfect. I hope CI's new showrunner reads this site and takes your cues to make it happen! I apologize for going a teensy bit off topic, but does anyone know if TPTB actually read the fansites? If not, they should! Yes they do. That's how we got G/E back for one more season.

I'm all for Moran's head on a platter. With some fava beans and a nice Chianti. ;D
About Eames and becoming a Lt. Well...we never would have heard word one about that except that the bumbling writer for Loyalty Part 2 needed a deus ex machina for the ending. How stupid did they think we were? (Wait! Don't answer that!) There were so many other ways that could have gone. Having Eames do it was just ridiculous. It would have been easy enough for the pro tem to fire him and for Eames to leave out of loyalty to Goren and disappointment in the department, as she ultimately did.
As for the return...I wonder if we'll even "see" the actual return or if they'll just pick up with a case and have a quick explanation in there about how they came back.
So...maybe Bobby's been bouncing at a club while working with his PBA rep (with Alex's urging) to get his job back. And maybe Alex took a position in a different part of NYPD after giving things some thought, but is willing to go back to MCS if Bobby does.
I don't necessarily need all loose ends wrapped up. My perfect ending for the last ep is open. They do the aria, finish their case, and the screen fades to black as both detectives head back to their desks. Business as usual. Just because the show ends, doesn't mean "they" do.
I do want to know where Donnie is, and how he is doing. I mean, he was brought in as a plot device...the least they can do is tie that one off. Nicole though...much as I want another Nicole/Bobby go round, resurrecting her means treading right into really dumb soap territory. There is no plausible way that I can think of to bring her back. I'm afraid it would be ridiculous if they tried it, and I don't want them to ruin it for everyone by doing so. I'd rather they give us a new criminal to torture our detectives. Maybe one that will screw with Alex this time, and bring out the chivalry in Bobby as happened in Lady's Man. That was sweet.
I want personal stuff, too, along with the procedural. Because if anything has been proven in the ratings race of the past couple of years, it is that the straight procedural has run its course for now. People want a mixture of both character development/personal storylines and the procedure. Good writers can give us that. (So THERE is my biggest hope for this year. Writers worthy of the show.)
Not a shipper...so I liked the ambiguity of the way Loyalty ended. There was enough for both sides to chew on...and I'd like to keep it that way. And let's face y'all...we aren't going to see Eames ride off into the sunset and get married...nor Goren either. That would tie it up too neatly. I'd rather they both seem to be moving along the road, on the way to where they are going, but unless we are getting another season, we don't need to see them "get there".
That'll ruin the mystery. The whole pull of attraction to these two is the ambiguity. To keep the shippy side alive - and we have to face facts that in fandom the shippy aspect is HUGE - they have to keep them both relatively unattached. A date now and then, but no serious entanglements that could upset the "shippy" ship. It's how CI has done it...walking the tightrope between "are they or aren't they", "do they or don't they", "will they or won't they", while never making the mistake of actually putting them together and going the way of every other show that has done so.

Oh wow! (admiringly) What a GREAT post! Everything you say makes sense. I AM a shipper but never wanted to see them get together during the show because the subtle suggestions were much more fun. It would have spoiled the UST. Must admit that I would love to see the ship in the final episode, but am realistic. I'll be happy enough if it is left open ended in the way "Loyalty" was ambiguous. Someone on another board said it was an ending that didn't ruin anyone's fanfiction stories! The way the Mothership ended with the party in the bar was nice. After all it IS a crime procedural and not (much) a soap. I second you Outerbankschick! Here is hoping for really good writers who will make everyone happy!

I am puzzled by the attractiveness of dtv. Goren, (besides the extraordinary acting, and the good looks!). I like that he is a cop that is there to respect and enforce the rights of all citizens (even criminals). On the other side he is like the redeemed phantom of the opera. He seems to be a person with bad feelings that has decided to do things right. Sometimes he has a hard time struggling about choices and emotions, often he is the only one having a clear picture of what is going on. (I love it when he enlightens Sgt. Deakins (both of them)).
