UNTETHERED
Will air February 16 at 9am and 12pm (EST) on SLEUTH. First aired December 6, 2007. Seventh episode of the seventh season.
Written by Warren Leight, Charlie Rubin, and Diana Son. Directed by Ken Girotti.
Guest Actors:
Leslie Hendrix as M.E. Rodgers
Mike Pniewski as Chief Kenny Moran
Trevor Morgan as Donny Carlson
Debra Monk as Warden Pelkis
Tony Goldwyn as Frank Goren
Synopsis: Goren goes undercover at a prison after his nephew reveals prisoner abuse.
Quotes:
Alex: “For what it’s worth, I don’t think Frank’s using. He looked healthy. And he took responsibility for his past.” Bobby: “Well, Frank is not in the program. Frank talks program. So, you say he’s downstairs?” Alex: “I didn’t promise him anything.” Bobby: “Bet he thinks you did.”
Frank: “Mom knew I needed money. Look, every single time I went to see her, she’d slip me a twenty, like I was a teenager.” Bobby: “Yea, every time? What’d that come out to, like, forty bucks?”
Ross: “The New York State village justice system. Amateur hour. You get mechanics, crossing guards, people with no legal training ruling on cases from their rec rooms.”
Donny: “You ask me, the people who are really crazy are the people who watch reality television, hook up with strangers on the internet. That’s everyone, though.”
Frank: “Why don’t you take Eames to a hotel and get it out of your system?”
Goren (to the Chief of Detectives): “You think I wasn’t playing insane. That I am insane.” Moran: “You ever asked yourself that question?” Goren: “Yes, sir. And I believe asking the question proves that I am sane.”
Bobby (to Frank): “If someone said you were about to jump off a bridge, I’d listen for the splash.”
Queries:
How well does Alex know Frank? Has she met him before?
Was there anything good about Frank?
What kind of institution is Tates?
Did Frank know Bobby was undercover at Tates? Was it his responsibility to help him? What could, should, he have done?
Where is Donny now?
Should Donny have done more to let someone know about Bobby’s situation?
Is Donny like Frank?
How much contact has Frank had with Donny?
Why did Frank finally tell Bobby about Donny?
Why did Frank still have the ring? Did Frank steal it? What will Bobby do with it?
Should Donny have been in prison?
Is Bobby still trying to find Donny?
Could, should, have Ross done more for Donny?
Did Ross expect Bobby to do something about Donny? Is that why he forced Bobby to take time off?
What happened to the warden and the guards?
Alex must have been aware of the possible consequences of her actions. Why did she agree to Bobby’s undercover work and to help him?
How many people were involved in this conspiracy to get Bobby undercover?
Did the Chief have any alternatives to how he treated Bobby?
Was Bobby punishing himself?
Was Bobby crazy during this episode?
Comments:
I highly recommend a review of Techguy’s comments regarding this episode.
And we continue with our review of Bobby and Alex’s tours through hell (g).
I have extremely mixed feelings about this episode. The acting, especially by Mr. D’Onofrio, is superb. It’s terrifying and harrowing to see his depiction of Bobby Goren in the hands of the sadistic guards. And Ms. Erbe gives excellent support. But the episode is far too much about giving Mr. D’Onofrio the opportunity to show off his acting skills (great though they may be). It’s a story with three credited writers, and it seems to be written by committee. There are holes one could drive a large truck through—Why couldn’t something be done for Donny? How could Goren know he’d be sent to Tates? Why not push the investigation to the state police?—and for once, I’m not willing to forget and forgive those holes. (Techguy much more eloquently addressed these and many other issues.) This is not an episode I enjoy viewing again, partly because of these problems, and partly because I’m so disturbed at seeing Bobby Goren suffer.
Submitted, as always, for your comments and considerations.
