More on Jay O. Sanders and other frequent actors – I called them Dick Wolf’s stable of actors. Not only was Jay a “hit man” in DEAD, but he was also an “Undertaker” in that episode with his own operating/work room in his garage. I used to think that Dick Wolf must have the actors he uses on some type of contractual agreement where it states “you agree to be in numerous shows” or be available on an “as needed” arrangement. I thought this because so many of the same actors always showed up in episodes on any given L&O show. The most often recurring actor on LOCI was Olivia d’Abo. Another repeat actor Wolf used was Daniel Sunjata, who first appeared on the Mothership in MAMMON, and then appeared regularly as a forensics tech on SVU for several seasons. He was adorably handsome. I even began to check the rerun schedule to see when he would be on TV! So I am not surprised to see a former actor appear in a different role or the same role as in the case of Chris Noth and Alana De La Garza in DW’s franchise (stable) .

I read that there was a rule that an actor had to wait at least a year before appearing on a L&O show after appearing again. Also, that it's been suggested that Dick Wolf should have a theater named after him since he's employed so many of them

Aren't these New York theatre actors who guest-star on the Law & Order(s) whilst "resting"?
Is it not also considered a "badge of honour" to appear on the show? I bet Dick Wolf coined that phrase. He deserves a theatre named after him considering the opportunities/jobs he has created for actors.

You are correct, Jeffan. LOCI employs local actors who love the opportunity to work on the various Law & Order shows.
The NYC theater group is tight and I'm sure when there is a new episode being cast, everyone available from that group comes out to audition. And if they did a good job in a prior episode, that helps them land another gig.

My understanding is that a gig on a L&O show is a sought after one among New York actors, and one of the great concerns about the ending of the Mothership and LOCI was that a lot of opportunities for actors to make some money doing good work.

I think that "one-year rule" may be a joke. Ms. a'Abo was certainly on LOCI in less than a year's time during the second season. At any rate, DW does or did hire the same actors as guest stars quite often. He also seemed to "try-out" an actor on a show before signing him or her to a permanent role. I just saw MUSHROOMS (1991) from the original show this morning. In that episode I believe we see S. Epatha Merkerson for the first time as a mother of slain child and two years later she's starring as Lt. on the show. There were other "try-outs" for actors on the Mothership who were cast on SVU, etc.

Ms. D'Abo was playing the same character. The one year rule, if it existed, was for playing a different character, as I understand it.

I just saw a Mothership episode in which Jeremy Sisto played an attorney in 2007. Later that year, he joined the cast as Detective Green's new partner, Cyrus Lupo. That's two different characters in the same year. But DW had the habit of showing an actor in a lesser role and then bringing that actor or actress back as a major character in one of the three shows. This happened so often that I refer to these actors as being in his "Stable."
