Synopsis: Goren and Eames try to repair their partnership while investigating the disappearances of two young people. Ross’ personal interest in the case causes additional problems.
Quotes:
Ross: “What do we have on Woody? I take it he doesn’t have a record?” Eames: “No. At 23, he barely has a footprint.”
Goren: “The hoochita from the Range Rover? Looks Woody’s age. Maybe his old soul wanted a younger body.”
Roy (to Eames): “What’s the matter, baby? You so used to ground chuck you don’t know filet mignon when you see it?” Eames: “All those steroids you took? Your filet mignon wouldn’t please one woman, let alone two.”
Roy (about Goren): “Bullwinkle.”
Ross: “And then his car detours from there to the South Bronx, BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES territory.”
Kathy Jarrow: “Major Case leaks like a sieve.”
Eames (to Ross): “Do you need both of us on this?”
Goren (to Eames): “You’re exactly right…I mean…”
Ross (to Goren): “Not now, Detective.”
Queries:
Does Major Case leak like a sieve ? Did Ross give this case to Goren and Eames because he thought it was an easy one?
How close were Ross and Kathy? Were they lovers?
Was Ross unprofessional during this case?
How does Rodgers react to Kathy? Does this case change Rodgers and Ross’ relationship, whatever that may be?
Does this case change the relationship between Ross and Goren and Eames?
Would Kathy have gotten away with the murders if other detectives were on the case?
Is Kathy mentally ill? Did she love Woody? Did Woody love her? Did Roy love Avery? Avery Roy?
What’s the state of the Goren/Eames relationship at the start of this episode? At the end?
Comments:
A mixed episode for me. Roy, played by Eric Roberts in his creepy, charming, snaky way, is perhaps too obvious a red herring. Woody and Avery are too shallow to really care about (and maybe we’re not meant to care about them). And Kathy’s motives and actions are unclear. But what I find interesting is the evolving relationships among Ross and Goren and Eames, all of it subtle and well acted by Eric Brogosian, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Kathryn Erbe. They don’t tell us too much, but they do tell us a great deal.
Submitted, as always, for your comments and considerations.

I can't help it, this is one of my favorite CI episodes! I adore Eric Roberts (hey, back off, don't judge me!) and have since King of the Gypsies. So to have Eric and Vincent sharing the small screen? Please. That alone would've been enough for me to squee in delight. That being said, I love the episodes for other reasons. I love Ross' over-involvement. I love G/E having to tread delicately while proving Ross' ex is a killer. I love the end when Ross spits back something (in my mind, it's always "F**k You" but I think the actual quote was "Screw you" ) to Kathy. The only thing I didn't like about this episode is I never got the nursery scene. Were they having a baby? Was it just a sign of how demented Kathy was? Was she delusional? Oh well. That was a small price to pay for me.

Queries:
Does Major Case leak like a sieve?
All departments seem to leak like a sieve. You read almost any article in the paper and it mentions an unnamed anonymous source not at liberty to speak. It has almost become a cliche.
Did Ross give this case to Goren and Eames because he thought it was an easy one?
I don't think so. It was a personal case for Ross and I believed that since he just went the extra mile for Goren that Goren would do the same for him.
How close were Ross and Kathy? Were they lovers?
Yes I think they were lovers.
Was Ross unprofessional during this case?
I don't know if I would say unprofessional but he did let his feelings cloud his judgment. I think Goren and Eames were sensitive to this but able to draw the line when it needed to be drawn.
How does Rodgers react to Kathy? Does this case change Rodgers and Ross’ relationship, whatever that may be?I
I think it did change after this. In Untethered she looked so happy and bashful to see him in the elevator and after this episode you could tell there was tension between them.
Does this case change the relationship between Ross and Goren and Eames?
I think their relationship was in a constant state of evolution. From outright suspicion at the bbeginning to grudging acceptance of their abilities to acceptance of them as "his" detectives.
Would Kathy have gotten away with the murders if other detectives were on the case?
Maybe
Is Kathy mentally ill? Did she love Woody? Did Woody love her? Did Roy love Avery? Avery Roy?
Kathy was very manipulative and used to getting what she wanted by any means necessary but I wouldn't say she was mentally ill and no, love was not involved in any of the relationships mentioned. Kathy coveted Woody and made her feel young. I suspected Woody coveted Kathy's money. Roy and Avery ditto. Perhaps Woody and Avery loved each other, but if they had managed to get away something tells me that it wouldn't have lasted.
What’s the state of the Goren/Eames relationship at the start of this episode? At the end?
Eames can hardly stand to look at Goren in the squad room at the begining. I laugh at that scene every time I see it. Goren looks like someone has stolen his ice cream cone. Goren knows he is in the dog house and knows he needs to make amends but like most men he can't quite summon up the courage to do it outright so we get the pathetic "your right". At first this seems to annoy Eames but I think she realizes he is trying and by the end of the episode cuts him a break.

I've often said (or rather thought to myself while I really said nasty things about the writers, sorry about that) anyway I've often said that this episode should have had her ask for a temporary new partner or at least seperate cases until she had forgiven him. I felt it would have been more realistic after her feelings being shown in "Purgatory." What do you guys think?

I watched Betrayed again this a.m. This is the episode immediately following Purgatory, right? So, at the end of Purgatory, Goren comes back to Major Case all clean-shaven and wearing a suit...
In the beginning of Betrayed, Goren is back to the full beard, suit jacket, casual shirt, no tie look. Any insight as to why?
He was happy to get his shield back at the end of Purgatory. Was it Eames' coldness coupled with the rat in his desk that caused emotional turmoil as evidenced by the scruffy look?

I think it's mostly Eames' coldness that's put him in that state. The rat certainly didn't help.

Angua- In real life maybe they would have been partnered with someone else, but I guess on TV they had to start somewhere post “Purgatory”. Kacesq- Good catch with Goren returning with a beard and scruffy looking! Yes, I agree with Patcat. He has had a rough week and more than one sleepless night because of Alex’s cold shoulder, and the rat is secondary.
Quotes: Roy (to Eames): “What’s the matter, baby? You so used to ground chuck you don’t know filet mignon when you see it?” Eames: “All those steroids you took? Your filet mignon wouldn’t please one woman, let alone two.” She knows how to push a guy’s buttons!
Roy (about Goren): “Bullwinkle.” Roy? I thought it was Trina? Or was it both?
Eames (to Ross): “Do you need both of us on this?” Did you see the look on Goren’s face?
Goren (to Eames): “You’re exactly right…I mean…” A lame-ass apology, but very Goren!
Does Major Case leak like a sieve? I guess confidential info. is hard to keep quiet everywhere. I can’t recall another incident in which something was leaked.
Queries: Did Ross give this case to Goren and Eames because he thought it was an easy one? I always thought he gave it to them because he wanted to offer Kathy his best team. However, maybe he wanted to give G/E an easy case because he knows they are “out of synch” and need to be “working it out”.
How close were Ross and Kathy? They had more than a casual past. Were they lovers? Yup. And I agree with Kacesq- Ross was more emotionally involved.
Was Ross unprofessional during this case? He didn’t actually cross a line, but his judgment was cloudy.
How does Rodgers react to Kathy? Oh she is jealous. Remember the look on her face when Ross, Goren and Eames leave the morgue? Does this case change Rodgers and Ross’ relationship, whatever that may be? I wonder… I had a feeling that the events in “Frame” caused them to break up, but if he was dating Liz at this time he doesn’t seem strongly committed to her by the way he looks at Kathy with puppy-dog eyes. Still, in “Frame” Bobby refers to her as Danny’s girlfriend. Hmmm. Maybe it’s an off/on again thing. I thought Liz’s comment about V-Boost being common with men of a “certain age” might be a zinger directed out of jealousy toward Ross. Of course Danny isn’t old at all. Did they ever mention the judge’s age?
Does this case change the relationship between Ross and Goren and Eames? I’m sure Danny was a bit embarrassed after it was all over, but I think his respect for Goren grew with each case.
Is Kathy mentally ill? Are psychopaths and sociopaths considered mentally ill? Did she love Woody? ? Did Woody love her? No, I think he loved the loft, Range Rover, etc. Did Roy love Avery? He loved being married to an attractive younger woman. Avery Roy? She loved what he could give her “think every college drop-out lives like this?”
What’s the state of the Goren/Eames relationship at the start of this episode? She is the ice princess and he is like a puppy with his tail between his legs. At the end? They are reconciling, but it will take a while for them to get back in synch. Whatever happened that night between “You’re right.” and snuggling on the desk dressed exactly alike the next morning, helped. See it in pictures in the Archives thread!
Comments:
A mixed episode for me. Roy, played by Eric Roberts in his creepy, charming, snaky way, is perhaps too obvious a red herring. How about Trina, his ex? She was a piece of work! So funny she and Roy left the Mets game on the whole time. (Although it is said that thinking about baseball makes it last longer…) Alex and Bobby handled that tape like it was contaminated! LOL Woody and Avery are too shallow to really care about (and maybe we’re not meant to care about them). And Kathy’s motives and actions are unclear. I think her motive was the “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” reason. The judge cheated on her, Woody cheated on her, her dream of having a baby with a husband were dashed. If she was planning to undergo IVF she would be totally jacked up on hormones too. Patcat, I agree that her actions are unclear. The writers gave us an outline and just left us to fill in the blanks ourselves. But what I find interesting is the evolving relationships among Ross and Goren and Eames, all of it subtle and well acted by Eric Brogosian, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Kathryn Erbe. They don’t tell us too much, but they do tell us a great deal. It’s that subtle read-between-the-lines style that I love so much about LOCI!
