If you have the writing then everything else should fall into place.

I voted for compelling villains and arias. Even silly story lines redeem themselves when the villains are fascinating and Goren gets to do his thing at the end of the day.
But I have to say that I would have liked to have checked several of Techguy's boxes. Writing, snark, and camaraderie between Goren & Eames are all very important.

I agree, writing is the "brain" of the body of work. So I voted for "D"- more personal details, but I don't mean over-the-top crazy-dramatic stuff, just some more insight. Especially about Eames.

I picked writing - because if that is up to par, as Patcat said, everything else falls into place.
I do want personal storylines. Characters make the show interesting. Some of the most enjoyable episodes are those with crimes that strike a personal chord with the detectives, as well. Magnificat, for one. And Want. And then there was that phenomenally twisted judge poking at all of them in ITWSH. Cases that really get under the detectives' skin, or villians that do - as in Nicole - or Tim Rainey (he dug under Alex's skin pretty good and set her up against Megan). Nicole got her good once, too - so it isn't just Bobby I'm thinking of here...
I get that some thought the personal stuff went over the top. I didn't. I liked it. Okay, maybe actually having MFB be Bobby's father was too much for some to handle - I agree Frame would have been just as good without that little detail. But it sure did make for a nice confrontation between Goren and Ross... ;D

Writing otherwise it's a flick.
