First session between Goren and the police psychologist. We find out he's missed appointments, and his Captain isn't too pleased about it. In a brief scene we find out Dr. Severin didn't have much difficulty getting his case, because we can infer no one else wanted to do it. She has Goren pretty much sized up before he enters the room, and his angel/devil observation looks and sounds like he's trying to change the subject before Dr. Severin gets a word in. She has her hands full.
I like this latest installment of a return to classic CI, although it must be said this was the episode originally intended as the Season 10 premiere. Eames is as snarky as ever, and I plan to include some of her comments--as well as my own snarky commentary--as poll options when I put it up soon.
I'll yield the floor now for others to make their own comments.

I really enjoyed this episode. I loved snarky Eames and I'm so thrilled to have quirky, engaged Goren back. I enjoyed the storyline, understood the motivations, and thought it all held together fairly well. I surprisingly enjoyed the shrink session which I've been dreading since it was announced. I thought they integrated it well within the show (I thought it would've been stuck on at the end...) and I liked that Goren was resistant to the sessions and the shrink. That made sense to me. I did chuckle when Goren asked if that was his file and Severin said it was only part of his file. I'll be interested in seeing how this plays out, but I liked that it was a quick scene - one and done. I'm disappointed that they cut "He's back" from that last scene. I liked that in the promos but I guess tptb felt it didn't make sense now that this episode wasn't first. I had hoped we'd get some explanation of Eames' return to Major Case as well.... Chris Brancato was either a fan of the early seasons or he did his homework (he wrote this episode) - for me, this episode did have an early season vibe. So far, two episodes in, I'm very happy with CI's return and Chris Brancato as showrunner... I would however like to see a return to the dark blue dress shirts that Goren used to wear with his suits. ::happy sigh:: I loved how he looked in them. I don't follow men's fashion - are they "out" now? Oh well... Skittles, something for you! In the psych session, Severin said that Goren's way of dealing with stuff has taken a toll on the people around him. Well his entire family is dead, he's not married, no kids - who does that leave? Eames! Maybe they'll discuss their partnership at some point.

Better episode than "Rispetto," in my opinion. It was good to see Goren thinking and asking inappropriate questions again. ;D
I loved how cagey Goren was with the shrink--he knows how the game is played, yet she seemed to get through to him.
After the second (!) aria, I wondered if TPTB are gradually unveiling Goren as a survivor of abuse? His passion in the questioning of the young banker, the empathetic hurt in his face after the banker's admission, and the empty stare into space at the very end. Also, the final shot is haunting--Goren alone with his thoughts, with his partner and his captain looking on as voyeurs.
I think Goren may be headed down a very dark path, but I'm actually anxious and curious to see where this goes.

Loved the episode! So much to think about. A few quick impressions:
Almost missed Goren's comment "Joe don't be a moron, we have legit suspects!" If I'd been the captain I'd have gotten in Goren's face too...off to the shrink for you!
The shrink's comment "What do you think will happen if you start looking at yourself?"
Eames using the word "slime" Goren "slither"
Last scene: Goren is under observation by everyone.
The title of the episode "The Consoler". We find out it is a name for the Msgr (What kind of consoling?) but I know from my catechism that the Consoler is also a name for the Holy Spirit or the Paraclete who among other things provides "guidance, consolation, strength and support to people"; an advocate or helper who intercedes on our behalf particularly in times of trial." (from Paraclete on wikipedia).
More when I've thought about it!
Enjoyed the reference to the movie "Bell, Book and Candle".

What Kacesq said. (why be redundant?) Also:
Rodgrs looked exceptionally pretty- more make-up than usual.
Eames had Bobby's back... alerting him to the capt. approaching, giving him THAT look when Bobby said "Don't be a moron" to the capt.
First they told us the captain's name was William, now it's Joe. JOE? REALLY? Why? Haven't we had enough Joes? (Jo Gage, Joe Dutton)

I'm still thinking about Theresa's actions and her motives. Let me see if I got this straight.
She was a very devout Catholic assigned to handle the payouts to sexual abuse victims. Did she decide to hook up for casual sex with her subordinate Joe as an act of rebellion against what she considered the betrayal of the Church in its attitudes toward sex abuse victims? Did she then embezzle the $2.7 million intended for one of the victims after Joe told her about his paltry settlement and she found out the victim was in an auto accident? And then when the Monsignor discovered the embezzlement and gave her five days to return the money if she had sex with him, she told Joe and Joe then killed her because he wanted the money and Theresa was the only one who could point the trail back to him?
It seems to me Theresa was done in not only by the Church in the person of the Monsignor, she was done in by the man with whom she chose to act out her rebellion. It's also interesting she has the name of a saint noted for mysticism and complete devotion to God--St. Theresa of Avila. Theresa would have been better served if she modeled her life after the saint instead of placing her trust in extremely flawed mortal men.

How many episodes until the shrink correctly answers Goren's riddle? Next episode? A few more in? I think she will fully gain his trust and respect when she does.

Theresa was the real consoler trying to advocate for the victims of abuse and became a victim herself. I liked the Msgr's sermon quote about the just and the unjust. Then you have Goren forced to go to the shrink (non-negotiable) frustrated about it to the captain, prickly about it with Paula(?) the shrink, "tick-tock" time restraints on him during the Msgr's questioning..."How much time?"

I liked it. Liked it a lot, even the psych session. Taken as a whole, the new captain is reasonable. Good stuff!

LOL, that is an actual riddle which I now looked up online thanks to angua. Techguy, I'm not sure Theresa's hookup with Joe was casual - to her. IIRC, the person who said it was casual was Joe and as Goren ably pointed out, he slithered into a lonely woman's life to manipulate her. As she had the Catholic Crush app on her iPad, she was looking for love/relationship and maybe she thought Joe - a guy she worked with and who ostensibly believed in her causes and passions - was her chance.

Kudos to the new showrunner and everyone else involved. Two episodes in and what a refreshing change. They've managed to put the intent back into criminal. The psych session was great. From the time Goren entered the room you just knew he was trying to gain the upper hand. Not so fast there big guy. The body language and posturing was perfect. VDO really does know how to work a scene. Loved watching him do his thing. I could have watched Ms. Ormand and VDO for another hour. I wasn't sure I heard Goren call the captain a moron either. Eames' reaction was good, but watch her after she closes the door behind her. She cups her hands behind her head in a display of frustration. Only Goren would remember the cat's name from "Bell, Book and Candle." I agree, bring back the blue shirts and oh and the sunglasses! The abuse victim Alice looked familiar.

I don't know if Johnny. as an abuse victim denying what had happened to him, would know the differences between a casual and serious relatonship. Goren and Eames workwd.very well together here. Even when they disagreed about whether it was suicide or murder, they respected and listened to each other.

I liked this episode and especially liked the way they slotted in the psychiatry session as it didn’t interrupt the flow of the story telling. Much better than an add-on at the end. If anything, it added to the storyline especially in the way the session ended - “what do you think will happen when we look at you” - then straight back to the case. I think this episode is full of clues as to what Goren will reveal about himself. I’m even looking forward to Goren’s next sessions when his emotional buttons start getting pushed!
I did get a lot of deja vu moments in this episode but good ones from excellent episodes in the early seasons.
My favourite line was the “hail mary(s).
