In US Army jargon, "boots on the ground" is about your tour of duty, about being somewhere or someplace or in the process of going there. Dr. Severin is peeling away the layers, scoping out where Goren's boots have been and where he might be going, even if he doesn't know himself. It's interesting that he brings up his friend Louis the car buff, about how owners of old cars "kill" them by flushing out the transmission, clearing out all the gunk inside that had been plugging up the holes. I see that Dr. Severin is trying to flush out Goren's boots and inner psyche without killing him--or he killing himself--in the process.

I was following Vincent's chat session so I didn't pay as much attention to the actual case as I should have but that's why God created DVRs. Again, I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed the psych sessions. I loved the mention of Louis - a nice nod to long-time fans - and the reference to Nicole and the flashback were nicely done and didn't make me want to scream. So he felt he pimped out his family to get a confession from Nicole - works for me.

Yea, I liked the psych scene. Mr. D'Onofrio's body language was superb. And Ms. Ormond is great. The commanding but gentle way she told him to sit down was wonderful. The crime part was a bit too involved for me. I did like the sets with all their streaming cyber numbers, and the lovely white blouse and business jacket Eames wore.

Anyone see In Plain Sight right after LOCI tonight? It had an interesting parallel with Marshall (a character somewhat like Goren except set in a comedy) being ordered to see a psychologist or pshychiatrist. In one session, he was standing and she asked him to sit down. She had to insist. Just thought it was interesting that similar scenes aired back-to-back.

Marshall had to see psych? H-m, Mary's the one who needs help.
Can anyone post details of the chat with Mr. D'ONOFrio?

Meh. The dazzling visuals weren't enough to overcome, IMO a rather flat tale. I liked it when Goren stood in front of the blue streaming numbers. What can be said about the captain's blue shirt and red tie? I enjoy the psych scenes, look forward to them each week. Nice to mention Lewis and was a little worried when Nicole popped up. Glad they moved on. Joey Frost's mom just can't seem to get it right. darmok, I know what you mean.

Patcat, the Reelblog has a transcript of the first chat up last time I checked. The second chat is still up at the USA chatter site, I think, but I would suspect/hope that Reelblog will post that as well...I have to tell you, the USA chat was much harder to follow than the twitter chat he did two weeks ago and I'm still miffed they do them during the actual episodes. I'd prefer they do them after the airing so we can talk to VDO about the episode. But VDO seemed to be having fun and said he hopes to do at least one more before the season ends... I've now watched this episode twice and decided I just didn't really care for any of the principals. The plot didn't involve me as much as Rispetto and Consoler did. That being said, in addition to the psych session, there were nice little touches in this episode. I liked Hannah's "let's go to the videotape." And I loved Goren turning to Eames in the lingerie store and going "I love this place" after the pretty clerk showed up the lingerie that was purchased. Nice to see that playfulness and a healthy interest in the opposite sex from Goren.

Liked your explanation of the title Techguy! Thanks! Just a couple of quick thoughts because I will have to watch again (I was chatting and watching...not compatible activities ). The words, phrases and themes that stuck out to me were "betrayal", "duty", and "pimping out". I liked the mention of Lewis in the session since he has been around in Goren's life a long time and is someone that he trusts and accepts. I liked the flashback of NW because if you remember that scene Goren tells NW that he was 7 and was "ashamed and frightened". The "ashamed" takes us back to Consoler episode where Goren says to Johnny "Ashamed...that's a very Catholic word!" which in turn takes us back to Rispetto where Nyle says he went to see his daughter because he didn't want her thinking he was judging her (read "ashamed of her"). More after a second viewing.

I liked when Goren says "they all go to prison," he then goes off to his psych session. Nice segue.
kacesq, you mentioned how you didn't care much for the principals. A different direction compared to the first two episodes.

What was Dr Severin trying to say by asking at the end ''..but what have you done for her son ? ''

I think it was her way of saying "Have you taken care of yourself?"

I think she's suggesting that Goren -- all his life -- has been sacrificing his personal happiness. Events in his childhood imprinted upon him guilt and low self-esteem. To prove himself worthy, he's irrationally focused on serving others -- the public, his mother, his mentor -- to all normal exclusion of self-consideration. Finding recently that his biological father was a serial killer who abused his mother reinforced those feelings.
Any other theses?

My thoughts:
The mother was a real lefty Mommie Dearest. That arc made me think of the Jeff Goldblum/Eames episode.
Jeri Ryan: Is it just me or does she look old with freakish fish lips?
Touch of liberalism: Eames talking about wars and defense contracts! Someone remembers President Eisenhower.
Miss geeks Ira and Josh! You could tell them apart.
Is VDO wearing a hair piece?
Love the shrink scene-nails him without cutting him down-car analogy spot on. Lewis! They did that for us veterans.
The lean is back! Practically struts around closing scene.
Could you really call Naomi a conspirator though? To think a negligee could bring you down.
He has met his match in Dr.Severin. I am as nervous as an accused witch in Old Salem who fears a stoning for saying this but I sensed a good tension between them.

I think you've hit the nail on the head, AL. I think Goren is apologizing for and trying to attone for his existence through much of his life.
I'm really liking the scenes between Goren and Severin. Very well written and acted, and they could've gone so wrong.
