I think Observer mentioned something at one time about liking Jim Sterling's episodes. I'm not great at analyzing all of the writing subtleties, but I can make a few observations.
I really like 4 out of the 5 of these, with See Me being my favorite and Ill-Bred being my least favorite of the 5. I tried to come up with common themes, and I really can't, at least not among all of the episodes. It is interesting that 2 of the episodes deal with schizophrenia (See Me and Gemini). In fact my favorite line in Gemini ("You know that I think paranoid schizophrenics make EXCELLENT witnesses") is a direct reference to See Me.
Other than that commonality, we have a broken down father/son relationship (Cherry Red) and a failed sibling relationship (Gemini). I suppose you could say the others also deal with relationships, but I don't know if they do more than other episodes. I don't think Ill-Bred is as much about relationships as it is simply about Paige using someone to get what she wants (her own place & money). In Mad Hops, the coach desires a romantic relationship, but the woman is only interested in helping her son. See Me isn't about relationships at all; it is about the doctor desperately trying to find a cure for himself and not wanting to admit that he is sick.
Well, these are just random thoughts, but maybe they'll help get the discussion going.

I see these as being brighter episodes .... where our villian gets to hide out in plain sight.
They are less convoluted and the twists are more .... um ..... normal? rather than dreged up from some 20 year old wound that has been festering and hidden.
I am not advocating either style; we have to deal with differetent criminals so I think we NEED these different flavors to enhance the feel of the show. While many things are condensed for time & a little showbiz flare is thrown in; all our criminals have a huge portion of reality/believability to them & that is great.
I really like these open episodes to be spaced between the others, kinda gives a breather to both myself and my fearless, hardworking detectives.

Yes, the plots are more about the here and now, as are the characters. These episodes are less taxing to watch, because it's almost as though the crime is happening right under our noses.
