Mr. Sinatra was a great singer, but I'd also point to Fred Astaire as a superb master of articulation.

Hey Beachboy,or any of our German speaking friends,my German friends up the road just got satellite TV and since they are bilingual they can watch LOCI on German TV as well as Irish. They cant stand the German voice of Goren, say its over arrogant without any of the nuances that are in VDO's voice, none of his playfulness etc that alleviates that arrogance. What do you think? They say it makes the German version less watchable. I think his voice is quite good. Not like Deakin's and Carver's which voices you can hear in other series, but I still like their voices too. Even Carver's not so deep voice. Eames's german voice is a little bit week. The german CI always use the same german speakers, for example: Almost every episode has the same german Homer Simpson voice. Nicole Wallace's voice is in english soooo much better. But I still think the german speakers do a great job. CI is different, because the actors have good voices too! I have an english episode from "Home Improvement" (because the Beach Boys are present) and the english version is actually worse. Even tough the german voice from Tim Allen says "Little Juice Coupe" instead of "Little Deuce Coupe".

Here's the finale scene from Art dubbed in German. Beauty might also be in the ear of the beholder, and my ear tells me the subtle nuances of Vincent D'Onofrio's speech inflections as Goren are missing. He has a clear and specific way of emphasizing with his voice when he summarizes and comments on what happened that doesn't quite hit the mark in the German dubbed version.

I agree that the original version is a lot better but you have to keep a few facts in mind: Some things need more words to express in German than in English plus there are always the cultural differences to consider. There are simply some comments you wouldn't say that way in German because nobody would understand them in the right way. An actor's own voice is ALWAYS better than his dubbed one but Goren's German voice is an excellent one - at least for German ears. I've written a lot of 'dubbing books' and I know how hard it sometimes is to find a German equivalent that does not only fit the lip movements but also the length of the actor's speech. I wish they would broadcast more series in the original with subtitles... Though I have to be careful what I wish for - I they did, I would be out of work.
