I've been watching the old shows and was curious how much Dick Wolf might have taken from the original Perry Mason series, particularly for L&O proper. He does mention Perry Mason in his interviews for the S1 DVDs. The form is very like L&O (detection and trial). Moreover, Moriarty's courtroom delivery is reminiscent of that of Raymond Burr.
Since I like literature, I enjoy the heavy formalism of both original series (though L&O is a lot more snappy, it must be said). I think the formulaic nature of these shows might even be somewhat addictive *g*

Interesting! I will have to check that out.
I don't find it nearly as striking in VDO as in Moriarty. But I suspect that there is also an old-fashioned style of courtroom delivery (I just watched Jimmy Stewart in (*Anatomy of a Murder* ... might have influenced that perception.)
