This is a heads-up/reminder for fans of American documentarian Ken Burns ("The Civil War," "Baseball," "Jazz"). His 7-part series "The War" about WWII begins tonight on PBS stations. Check your local listings for air dates, times, and repeat airings.

I saw the first episode last night, and I urge people to see it. It's easy to parody Ken Burns' style, and he is terribly earnest. But he has a potent style that produces terribly moving stories, and the first episode of this documentary shows that he's turned his style and camera on a great subject.
I thought I knew something about World War II, but I knew nothing. The bravery of the men and women who fought this war--and of those that stayed behind--is extraordinary, as is their honesty in remembering those days. I just wish that my father, who was a medical corpsman in the South Pacific (he was one of those very lucky men who had a good war--he helped others, never had to shoot anyone, and had a terrific adventure as a small town Indiana boy in strange and wonderful places like Australia and Guam), had lived to see this.

Again, I want to urge everyone to watch this superb program. A warning, though--it's not for the faint of heart, and that's not just because of the graphic content of the program. I cried last night at the death of one of the young soldiers profiled. But it's a great documentary.
