Well, his main competition appears to be the great American actor Forrest Whittaker who apparently is mesmerizing as Idi Amin in THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. Whittaker is a quiet, shy, thoughtful man--or at least he comes across that way in his interviews--who frequently plays outlandish characters. Not unlike Mr. D'Onofrio.
It would be cool if Mr. O'Toole won the Oscar, although he may not be able to go to Los Angeles to pick it up. He's been giving interviews on the East Coast to promote VENUS, and while physically he's aged, he still seems fairly with it. If you go to NPR.org and do a search for his name, you can listen to some of these interviews.
I think you have to love a man who'll ride a camel into an interview, and then give the camel a can of Guinness to drink.

There's an article in GQ this month that mentions O'Toole: It's an article about how (post-Deniro) all the young, male actors seem to think that acting has become an endurence sport, and that "good" acting means spectacular intensity (of a kind that isn't too condusive to the audience having a fun time at the show). The writer thinks that this kind of "intensity" isn't good show business, and shouldn't be encouraged... it isn't fun to watch, it isn't fun to do, and it takes the focus away from an actor's charisma, and towards his "craft." He uses Peter O'Toole as an example of an actor who doesn't take himself so seriously, and thus gives a more enjoyable performance. I personally don't know really know who Peter O'Toole is, so I can't really judge... but I thought maybe you all would be interested in the article.

I'm reminded of a line by O'Toole's character Alan Swann in "My Favorite Year"--"I'm not an actor, I'm a movie star!" For O'Toole, the opposite is true.Venus
