The starcrossed horse Barbaro was euthanized earlier today. The combination of his terribly broken leg and its complications were too much.
I know that he was just a horse and there are many, many greater problems and tragedies in this world. And I know that the world of horse racing is terribly corrupt. But I've always loved horses, and had hopes this beautiful creature might beat the odds. So, I'm saddened by this loss.

I heard this on my drive into work. I think that horses are magnificent creatures and I, too, thought it was quite sad.
He suffered for almost 8 months, right?

I do think he was loved. both the vet and the Johnsons seemed to do the best by him. As corrupt as racing is, I think he brought the best out in his owners.

Yes this is a sad story. I was hoping until the end that Barbaro would beat the odds, but it was not to be. Two quotes on the MSNBC story pretty much sum it up:
“Certainly, grief is the price we all pay for love,” co-owner Gretchen Jackson said.
Dr. Dean Richardson, chief of surgery at the New Bolton Center, fighting back tears, added: “Barbaro had many, many good days.”

I've had the privilege to share my life with many animals over the years, and each loss took a piece of me with them and left a piece of themselves with me. And even the animals I don't personally know, like Barbaro, can make you feel something in your heart. I feel a little sorry for people who don't understand that special relationship between a person and their pet.

Nicely said, Rom. And nice to see you again. Seen on a bumper sticker: We are not the only creatures on the planet; humans are the only ones to believe it.However, I dislike cats and some dog species for what they do to me. Don't even need to see one to know that there is one in the same room. Sorry, Patcat.
