When a visiting Iowa teenage girl disappears during her New York City school trip and later turns up dead, the ensuing publicity creates a massive media frenzy that nearly engulfs the Major Case Squad detectives investigating the case.
While new team members Logan and Barek investigate the similarities between this case and that of another missing girl, MCS veterans Goren and Eames discover that the dead girl had been contacted by a mysterious “admirer” requesting a meeting between them. The case becomes even more complicated when they later find out this “admirer” is the son of a powerful philandering judge.
As the detectives press forward with their investigation, Goren has to turn to an old adversary for assistance. As suspicion continues to swirl around the judge and his son, the detectives soon find out that the older man is someone who will stop at nothing to protect himself and his son from implication in the murder, even if it means intruding into the personal lives of the detectives and their professional relationships.
The progression of the case to resolution turns out to be more traumatic, revealing, and personally involving for Goren than even he could have imagined at the outset.
