A young violin prodigy, Laura Booth, mysteriously vanishes during intermission of an opera performance starring her soprano mother, Gillian. When the violinist’s body is later discovered stuffed in a shaft at the performance hall, Logan and Barek are called in to investigate.
An autopsy reveals the young woman’s fingers were covered with cocaine and resin, which leads the detectives to the opera crew’s rooftop sex, alcohol and drug parties. The detectives initially believe the violinist’s death was connected to the cocaine that some of the opera crew were smuggling in the costumes used by the performers.
The focus of the investigation later shifts to the company’s conductor, Maestro Philip Reinhardt, who was seen and heard arguing with the violinist the night of the murder. The detectives also learn the conductor had sought out makeup, and during an examination, teeth marks are discovered on his back which are determined to belong to the murdered woman.
Logan and Barek believe the case is solved, until strange twists and bizarre behavior by one of the characters lead the detectives to conclude all is not as it appears. Carver warns the detectives not to jeopardize the case against Reinhardt, but Logan and Barek continue to pursue an alternative angle to its surprising and emotional conclusion.
