When the car carrying a mother and her four sons blows up, killing all but her and the oldest boy, Goren and Eames investigate. The detectives determine the two survived because they were in the front seat, the mother had lowered the front windows, and therefore she and the oldest boy did not absorb the full blast of the explosion when they were blown free.
The detectives follow leads related to Middle Eastern men seen at the gas station where the mother stopped for gas, with one of the men making a possible threatening gesture as he walked toward the car.
The detectives interview the woman's husband, the father of the boys, who was involved in a project related to national security at his company but was not in charge of the project even though he had invented the device that won the contract for his company. The detectives discover that the husband/father had been passed over for advancement before because of his family responsibilities.
Interviews with the children's maternal grandmother give the detectives added insight into the mother and the family's dynamics. The detectives also observe details about the surviving son and interview him in the hospital, giving further evidence of the family's life and habits that are crucial to solving the case.
When the discovery of a defective space heater leads the detectives to conclude what really happened and ultimately to a resolution of the case, Goren personally intervenes on behalf of the surviving son.
