This was one of the earliest CI episodes I saw and my initial impression was that it was a really strong episode. I've since noticed a few small flaws but it doesn't really interfere with my enjoyment of the action. As pointed out by others, it was unrealistic that the parade went on while Goren and the bomber were fighting and then Goren and Eames just wandered off after he was shot. And the knife at Ethan's throat was very staged.
However, I remember being amazed at Goren's powers of deduction (and his facial expressions) when he found the hair gel on the wall, and worked out how tall the "frequent visitor" had been. And I loved Eames' attitude with the Aramaic, she just knew Goren was going to know what it was. The FBI was really presented as inept, it took Goren to work out that it was going to be a suicide bombing and that they'd filmed a suicide message. Why didn't the FBI recruit Goren? He made all their guys look stupid.
Ethan's story was that of the pilgrim. As a teacher, I know that so many people can be lead astray because they are searching for meaning and someone offers something that seems good on the surface. I also found the story of Leslie, who was used and then murdered, quite believable and sad.
If the statistics given about the containers that are checked by customs are accurate, then Eames is right not to sleep well, and we probably shouldn't either! I liked seeing the team outdoors on the dock, and there was some more unusual framing of shots that were quite striking.
I miss the quirky little details that were introduced in some of these earlier episodes, like Goren trying to defend the fact that he read the Smithsonian because it fitted on his treadmill (and what happened to that treadmill?). The story about reading the Quoran to impress a girl didn't really ring true at the time, but seems to fit with his idea of "learning" how to impress girls which was discussed in "Want". Might just have been a convenient explanation for his unusual knowledge. I thought his understanding in the chicken shop, and of why the shop owner might not want to talk to them, was an interesting touch and again showed Goren's insight.
The case probably would have been taken out of their hands early on if it was real life, but as a show it brought up some interesting points and really make you think about right, wrong and how we view certain situations. I thought it was an intreaguing and throught provoking episode.
