Well, sad to say, but my first impression is the same as Trisha’s. I only watched the first hour – turned to CSI:NY for the second hour, and watched CSI:NY again this week (though if it keeps going the way it has been, I’ll be free to watch L&O, or a test pattern, during that hour. ) My impression was that Farina was trying do certain things with the character. Very consciously and deliberately trying to do certain things with the character. Which for me means that I can never forget the actor and lose myself in the story. He looked like an old-style actor, deciding how to convey certain things, while all the time his unconscious affect was reflecting that process, rather than the internal process of his character. Unlike Trisha, I’m willing to give him a while to settle into the part before I figure out whether or not he’s going to do a good job. I’ve known actors to start out badly in a role, pushing too hard, thinking about it too much, and then settle into a more integrated portrayal. Heck, in the first episode they filmed of I Spy (not the first one they showed, which was filmed later, but the one that was the original pilot) – in that first episode, Bill Cosby was a terrible actor – as wooden as they come. But he was willing to learn from Robert Culp – who may not have D’Onofrio’s range, but is damn good at what he does – and so Cosby ended up as a solidly good actor. Of course, Farina’s underlying affect doesn’t encourage me to believe that he would be willing to take pointers from Martin and Merkerson (Van Buren), but who knows... And he might be capable of settling into the role on his own, given a bit of time. I figure I’ll be able to plow through a couple more episodes of CSI crud, hoping, for Sinise’s sake, that his show will improve... if not, I’ll drift over to L&O and see if Farina has settled in.

I missed this week's episode. Dorm functions and the VCR didn't switch over when I programmed it. I was disappointed to miss Candice Bergen (although I have a feeling my parents caught her...Dad would at least).
Well, all the interviews talk about working witht he writers to develop the character. I mean, Farina is coming in to replace Jerry Orbach, our beloved Lenny [sniffle]. Gotta be some pressure to NOT make him a carbon copy. I figured last week's episodes were the first-date jitters. Unfortunately homework in the middle of the week makes it difficult to catch the show regularly. When I catch him I'll see how it goes.
And Trisha, no you're not alone in your admiration of Jesse L. Martin! Tee-hee, definitely swoon-worthy, especially when he sings!

I got the impression & I don't know why .... that Farina's character is showing rough right now & is going to have all those flaws be red herrings & have him shine later one .... I forget now the one "clue" I interpreted this way & I WAS 1/2 asleep ......... so who knows.

Well, I'll keep watching for a while with hopes that Farina gets better and less orange as he settles in, and that Fontana becomes less of an asshole/idiot.

I thought that Farina did pretty well for the first few eps. My friend from Chicago said that the $300 shirts and the fancy car was plausible for a Chicago cop who was "connected".

The thought crossed my mind, as well – that the impression of someone thinking about how they were coming across, and deliberately trying to present in a certain way, might conceivably be a quality of the character. Especially since he seemed a bit stereotypical. So who knows, you might be right. (eeek! Did I say that? ) We’ll just have to wait and see. I’m still slogging my way through CSI:CI …er, I mean CSI:NY. But unless it improves fast I’ll be watching L&O in a few weeks.

Well, I just hope I can stay awake long enough to see if WE are correct in this - yes, that is more in line to what I was thinking - that he was being obnoxious and crass to some witnesses to shake them up & we just don't know him well enough now - so we are assuming the worst ..... I thought I saw some core shine through of good cop.

I think Fontana and Green came off quite well in the episode. Someone needs to cast Peter Strauss in another series.

Anyone see last night's episode "Gunplay"? I thought it was an excellent episode. Fontana and Green were great together. The actor playing the step-father has been on about 10 times on the three L&O shows since 1994. So Trisha, did you see Ed in his dress uniform last night?!

Thanks for the article, Niki!
I liked yesterday's ep but a bit confusing keeping track of the players if, like me, you headed to fridge part way through.
CSI:NYC is shot in L.A? Oooh those fakers!
As for Ed. Mmm, Ed. I'd be the bad cop to his good cop any day! ;D

Last night, I didn't move a muscle! ;D I have a habit of wandering away sometimes and don't come back until after an episode is already finished. Missed a lot of endings on a lot of shows recently. I figure they'll repeat soon. I usually record the few I want to see in complete detail. Last night, I watched it all and recorded it as well. All three of the CSI shows are filmed in LA.

I wouldn't mind seeing Logan again! Found this on TV Guide's site: NEXT BIG THING: Chris Noth is in talks to reprise his role as Det. Mike Logan in a series of Law & Order TV movies for NBC, Variety reports. Noth's last L&O pic, 1998's Exiled, was a huge hit for the network, drawing 28 million viewers.

I can understand not knowing where to post that link. The whole thing is pretty confusing. The tone of the website in general seems professional and legitimate, yet that story seems anything but. It cites vague, undefined “industry sources,” which is suspicious enough. But it goes on to cite Page 6. Anyone who lists Page 6 as though it were a credible news source might as well put up a neon sign saying “Don’t believe a word we say.”
“The New York Post’s Page Six column has chronicled D’Onofrio’s instability...”
Chronicled?? Anyone who dignifies Page Six with that word has a pretty warped perspective. It made me wonder if Broadcasting & Cable might be yet another part of Rupert Murdoch’s evil empire. I was startled to find out it’s owned by the same corporation that owns Variety. So I can’t figure it out. But whatever their reason for running something like that, the story in general does not seem reliable.
At the very end they say, “An NBC spokeswoman confirms Noth’s planned guest spot, but says she knows of no discussions of any cast changes on the show.”<br> That is something I would consider reliable.
As for the rest, as disappointed as I was with NBC for overruling Balcer about the ending to Great Barrier, I’m not ready to believe that they’re interfering on the level of trying to force a change in casting. I don’t think they’re that confused about why most people watch Criminal Intent.
As to where these two posts belong, thinking about it, it seems to me that even though Noth used to be on L&O the original, the link and posts are about his upcoming appearance on Criminal Intent. So maybe these posts belong in the section for general comments about Criminal Intent. Moderators...?? What do you think?
