Mystic (WTNH) -- Mystic Pizza was Southeastern Connecticut's little secret until a movie put the pizza parlor on the map. Two decades later, the town and Mystic Pizza are celebrating the movie that made them famous.
It was exactly twenty years ago that Julia Roberts first served up a little slice of heaven. It was a moment in movie history which launched her career, along with worldwide recognition of this little pizza shop.
"Julia became so famous and that just kept it going year, after year," said Dede Smith of Mystic Pizza.
Mystic Pizza had just 10 tables when screenwriter Amy Holden wrote about the waitresses there. Now it has grown into tourist attraction which can serve 800 pizzas on its busiest days.
"I just wanted to see if what I remember from the film is part of this restaurant also," said Diane White of Pennsylvania.
So is the pizza from the small shoreline shop really a slice of heaven?
"What's your review of the pizza"
"I recommend it. It's good," said Carol Miller of Kentucky.
"Nice and doughy, thick, greasy. It's great," said Megan Curran of Norwalk.
"It's a slice of heaven for sure," said Corrie Schmitt of Massachusetts
Most of the movie was shot on a sound stage in Stonington, but there was a very lively scene filmed right here in downtown Mystic and the drawbridge was up.
"It's so beautiful so beautiful. Of course we had to eat here at Mystic Pizza," Miller said.
There's no guarantee other movies made in Connecticut will make such a mark. However, the state says that since it started offering tax incentives two years ago, 90 movies have filmed here. That's generated more than $600 million in revenue for Connecticut.
After 20 years, Mystic Pizza is still a hot commodity. "It is a long time ago. So I'm gonna have to watch it again after being here," White said.
