I agree that Nikki Finke (and Variety) are reliable sources -- and so I say Joy! However the official NBCU press release (see below) ignores L&O in the returning series sub-head, signaling again that the broadcast network's executives (Is Ben Silverman not a horse's patoot?) will again foolishly undervalue this landmark drama. According to Variety, the series will get "a reduced order." The rest of the renewals and pick-ups will be officially announced on May 19th according to the following. Boldfaces mine. AL ---------------- NBC ANNOUNCES AMBITIOUS LINEUP OF PROGRAMMING DOMINATED BY NEW SCRIPTED SERIES FOR 2009-2010 PRIMETIME SEASON THAT EXTENDS THE NETWORK’S QUALITY BRAND NBC Entertainment press release Published: May 4, 2009 New Series Include Four Dramas: "Trauma," "Parenthood," "Mercy" and the Event Series "Day One" as Well as Two Comedies: "Community" and "100 Questions"Returning Series Pickups Include "Heroes," "Southland," "Parks and Recreation" and Six New Episodes of "Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday"NEW YORK CITY – May 4, 2009 – NBC unveiled today a strong lineup of broad and diverse quality programming for the 2009-2010 television season announcing the pickups of six new series featuring four new drama including "Trauma," "Parenthood," "Mercy" and the event series "Day One," as well as two new comedies including "Community" and "100 Questions." "The Jay Leno Show" will be broadcast Monday-Fridays, 10-11 p.m. ET beginning in the fall. Additional series pickups will be announced May 19, when NBC announces its 2009-2010 schedule.... ..."We are thrilled to be announcing such an awesome slate of new series that build on our existing quality brand and deliver emotional, human stories," said Ben Silverman, Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios. Thank you again Annabelle for keeping us up-to-date. I must say "horse's patoot" had me laughing!
A reduced order is better than no order. So will this have any bearing on a Season 9 of Criminal Intent?

Effect on Season 9 CI? I have no idea. However were USA planning on canceling the show I don't think it would make that announcement three episodes into the new season. It would likely have a chilling effect on interest (and therefore ratings and revenue.)
I certainly hope Dick Wolf didn't do any CI-adverse horse trading to get his new series "Lost and Found" on NBC.

That was my thoughts and why I asked the question.
He's got his Gunsmoke record to break, a new series and so I was thinking that something has got to "give"!
