I never understood why people supported him either. Firstly. She was a child. I don't believe kids have the capacity to fully understand the emotional/psychological/physical consequences of sex. So to me, even if they're 12 and say 'okay' or 'yes' I don't think they truly know what they're doing.
With that aside, the girl even said that he RAPED her. FORCED her...it was the lawyers that downgraded it to unlawful SEX with a minor... but you know Hollywood, they have to give second chances to perverts just because their famous. Another example: Mary Kay Letorneau...on Entertainment Tonight they were going on about how "Romantic" it all was that she was finally marrying the guy (formerly the child/student) she had sex with. Nevermind the fact that she messed him up royally psychologicaly or ruined her husband/children's lives by doing this. Oh and yeah, that he was (I think) 13 and she was his teacher at the time. Frickin' Hollywood...they think Polanski is a martyr or something. He "Suffered" by being afraid or something? I'm sorry, the girl he raped is scarred for life and what is HIS punishment? He got to sit up in his mansion, drinking it up with celebrities, made movies, and enjoyed his freedom.
But yeah, I do think people still blame the victim in rapes. All the time and things like this are reasons why people don't come forward very often. I myself know 4 women who had been raped (that I know of, it's probably much much higher). None of them went to the cops. One was raped by her brother, was in therapy and told her family. What happened? The entire family turned on her and basically stopped talking to her. If it weren't for her friends and her fiance, she would be a wreck. It was so hard on her. Makes me so angry that the victim is re-victimized by people blaming them for it.
Also, this is just me, but I think the phrase 'sexual assault' seems like its trying to soften the blow of what the act is. When I hear 'sexual assault' I first think "assault" and someone getting beaten comes to mind...then I remind myself that its really rape. When I hear the word "rape" all the things about it come to mind. Horror, angst, tragedy, anger, fear. To me, people should use the term "Rape" as it gets people more emotionally invested in the topic, but instead its downgraded to the phrase "Sexual assault". But that's just my opinion.
