Compliments of The Reel, a Q & A from a french source that gives some more information about VDO's feelings & plans: www.thereelblog.com/These two answers intrigued me: Are you satisfied that the door of the series you still open?
VD'O. : There is a saying, "it is always best not to burn any bridges". Goren is a special role and it was a shame away forever. As an actor, I always delighted to find it. But the series may contact Jeff (Goldblum) to have enough success that the team decides to dispense completely with my services, I understand easily. Dick (Wolf) and I would have been stupid not to leave the door open!
Could you repeat the TV soon?
VD'O : The projects I have for now are the movies. I had some discussions that could bring me back to the small screen, but it has nothing to do with "New York, Criminal Division. And then it would be for a role opposite of Goren.

I read the article, or should I say i tried to, I wish someone could get a proper translater. am I the only one that finds the timing of this " article" a little suspect? We begin a campaign to get Goren and Eames back, or at the least give us a proper goodbye, we have a blog site, a web site, a twitter account, we've e-mailed, phoned and written to USA NBC wolf and everyone we can think of we are also now on YouTube. Still no-one respods except with silence or a curt no comment from Ms. Erbe's representative. Now all of a sudden we get a garbled french interview, with the impression that Vince and Dick had a talk and the upshot was Jeff would take the lead, with Vince in the wings should he fail with the audience. I feel the faint smell of a skunk here, what better way to derail the fans than to toss them a bone written in mangled english , I don't buy it. If this were the case why until August to negotiate, and why negotiate at all, if Vince and dick had an agreement, why not a more formal announcement, and why include Kate and Eric? I still think they had to go because USA wanted them out to make room for the new version. I hope this doesn't end up deterring anyone who is a dedicated fan from continuing with the fight, which I strongly suspect is it's true purpose. Let's wait until we find out where all the players stand before we stop our campaign. Remember the reasons why we started this in the first place, a return of Goren and Eames or at the least a proper season nine to say our goodbye. If we lose and the show ends up a "lighter" version than whoever can stomach that can stay, I leave with Vince.

Actually, reading this interview--badly translated as it is--made me feel a little better. If Mr. D'Onofrio is leaving because he believes it's time to do so, because he wants to do different things, and he wants to spend more time with his family, I don't think those are bad reasons.
But then, I don't believe in conspiracy theories in general. Humans aren't organized enough.

And yet in July in those French interviews, wasn't he saying if they wanted him, he'd be back?
I *never* got the impression he was done with Goren a few short months ago.
And why don't we hear this through his publicist? a interview in English?
This just has me scratching my head and feeling played.

I agree with Suzanne. We don't know enough about when, why or where this interview took place to decide if what is written is verbatim what VDO really meant. It seems to be, if the words have been translated correctly.
What I want to know is why? Why is Vincent having all of these interviews with the French media? Is that because "Staten island" is a fan favorite over there? Does he feel less pressured to speak his mind away from the US? What is it?

You know, if I was American, I might feel a little betrayed that he would tell all this to a non-US publication.
And it has been questioned within my "earshot": I don't see the name of the interviewer and I don't see where and how they did the interview...via phone, video???
No contact information. No introduction.....
Just more food for thought and head scratching.

I went to the article in French and used the Google translator (since I don't know any French) and it seemed a little better than the Yahoo version. I don't think the article says anything different from the press releases made by VDO & Dick Wolf at the time of the announcement -- a little more expansive perhaps. He is not going to burn any bridges and says so. Of course, if he doesn't want to burn any bridges he will say it is his decision and won't mention that they didn't offer enough money. He is always working on film projects and I am sure he is looking forward to them -- he always is. Of course his family will be happy to see him more, but if he does more film projects he won't be home as much -- remember this is why he decided to take the show to start with. If he knows about the fan revolt, he wouldn't mention it -- that would not be in keeping with the company line they decided to use. He is open for guest appearances (translation, if the show tanks, he will come back) -- this is consistent with Basric's info from her blog. So, if you really analyze it, it doesn't say anything new. If it did, he would have released something in the US. Until there are additional official announcements, I'm going to remain hopeful.

Copying what Dani said on the reel. She's right.

Thanks for the link, Wendy. Somehow I missed this when it was initially posted at The Reel. Still nothing definitive. This is so frustrating.

The reel now has a small clip of the video and a better translation. I think it's pretty clear Mr. D'Onofrio is comfortable with his departure.
I've written it many times and I believe that Mr. D'Onofrio only owes us a good performance. But I do wish he had a publicity agent. It might help some moments like the ones we're in right now. He doesn't do a lot of interviews to start with, and I think his past experiences with some American press has made him leary of interviews. And I can't blame him sometimes, what with some of the idiot comments and mistakes we've seen.
Of course, I could just be going through the stages of grieving, and have now reached the acceptance stage (g).

I've just read the more professional translation of the interview and listened to the video.
I really liked Vincent's body language when he talks about Jeff!

Vincent D'Onofrio: "I turn to something else ..."
From Telestar.fr 10.20.09
TS: Why are you leaving the series Criminal Intent?
VDO: I have played in this series for seven and a half years and I think I have gone around my character. Dick Wolf, the creator and I agreed that Jeff Goldblum would take over with the part of Detective Zach Nichols. At the same, we decided that my character Goren would not disappear completely from the series. I will leave the main role, but I will come back occasionally.
TS: Was it a difficult decision to make?
VDO: Yes, because I know there are a lot of viewers following the series in the USA, but also all over the world. It’s just that I have three children and I don’t want to play a part that takes up this much of my time. I came to realize that it’s time for me and my family to move on to other things.
TS: The arrival of Jeff Golblum during the eighth season had much to do with this decision. And the fact that you alternated episodes last year, did not create a rivalry?
VDO: No, not at all! Jeff is a nice guy and an excellent actor, whose work has often inspired me. It's a huge honour that he'll be replacing me.
TS: You've had some health concerns during the filming of the series a few months ago. Didn’t you think of leaving [the series] back then?
VDO: No, there was never a question of leaving the series, but just to ease my shooting schedule because it was really too heavy to bear!
TS: Are you pleased with the way that your character is leaving the series?
VDO: We have not yet begun to shoot the two-parter, so I really can’t talk about it. In any case, it will happen in the first 2 episodes of the ninth season. It will be dramatic, but Goren will not die!
TS: What do you think the departure of Kathryn Erbe at the same time as yours?
VDO: I have no idea how she feels about it. I can not speak for Kate, you should ask her that question.
TS: How do you look back on all those years in Goren’s skin?
VDO: To me it's a real accomplishment. It is so rare today that a series on the small screen lasts for this many years.. It surely must be an element of luck and also the talent of the writers.
But I will always be very proud of the longevity that represents this adventure. And I feel I have created a unique character whose style -original and innovative at the same time-, pleased the viewers.
TS: Have you heard the reaction from fans of the series?
VDO: Just the people that I come across in the street, that let me know that it saddens them that I’m leaving.
TS: Are you pleased that the door to the series will stay open for you?
VDO: There’s an expression that says: “it’s always better not to burn all your bridges” Goren is a special part and it would be a shame to let go of him forever. As an actor, I would be delighted to bring him back.
But with Jeff (Goldblum) the series may be sufficiently successful that the new team decides to waive my services all together, I would easily understand. But Dick (Wolf) and I would have been stupid not to leave the door open!
TS: You spoke of your children, how did they react to learn that you will be working less?
VDO: They were enchanted ! They will see me more often.
TS: Will you be doing more television next?
VDO: The projects I have for now, are all movies. I had some talks that could bring me back to the small screen, but that will have nothing to do with "Criminal Intent”. And then, it would be a part opposite of Goren.
TS: You just celebrated your 50th birthday last June, was that a big step for you?
VDO: Of course it's a step. The most exciting is the mystery that lies in the way that the next twenty years of my life will unfold! I just wish my career will take a totally different direction from everything what I have been able to do so far."
