'Law & Order: CI' scoop: Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio named new captain
by Michael Ausiello
Law & Order: CI is undergoing yet another staffing change.
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio has been cast as the show’s new captain, sources confirm to me semi-exclusively. She replaces Eric Bogosian, who is the latest CI vet to depart as the show shifts its focus to Jeff Goldblum and new partner Saffron Burrows.
As I previously reported, Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, and Bogosian will exit after appearing in the show’s two-part season 9 premiere. Rumor has it one of the three will be carted off in a body bag.

Is it possible that it really is just a false rumor? That would be nice but I doubt it. Also, I am somewhat glad that they will have a captain. That was worrying me.

Besides the Ausiello piece, this appeared in THR: www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/television/news/e3i422dde68f61e91f245b448122f894b5d'Criminal Intent' has a new captain Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio joining USA's drama series By Nellie Andreeva Nov 1, 2009, 11:00 PM ET Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio has joined USA Network's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," completing the casting transformation on the police procedural for its upcoming ninth season. She will play the new captain taking over the Major Case Squad on the Wolf Films/Universal Cable Prods. series. Mastrantonio's character, who comes from a working-class background, succeeds Capt. Danny Ross (Eric Bogosian), who headed the division for the past three years, following the departure of Capt. James Deakins (original cast member Jamey Sheridan). Mastrantonio is one of two new faces on "L&O: CI" for next season, joining Saffron Burrows. The hires follow the exit of four regulars on the show: original stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe as well as Bogosian and new mom Julianne Nicholson, who is being replaced by Burrows. With the departure of D'Onofrio, the cop drama is taking on a lighter tone. It centers on Jeff Goldblum, whose character Zach Nichols becomes the squad's top detective. Mastrantonio is not a stranger to police procedurals; she has recurred on CBS' "Without a Trace." Nicholson most recently starred in the CBS/Hallmark Hall of Fame movie "The Russell Girl."

Apparently this last article is incorrect in-- Mastrantonio starred in "The Russell Girl".
You think they would check their facts.

Aparently this is official. I see that Mastrantonio has already taken a few barbs on Twitter and other CI/VDO sites simply because she's part of the replacement cast. Glad that my home site is here, where no one would stoop that low.

I am actually quite glad to see that Mastrantonio in this role. In fact I actually prefer her to Eric Bogosian. But I'll have to see how her character is written first... Annabella Sciorra... now there was a waste of talent (thanks to the writers)

I've also been reading the digs about MEM. How she's dull & boring. I remember her in "Robin Hood" and in "The Abyss." She kicked butt in both films, and was quite good. haven't seen her lately, but I'm sure she'll handle the role.
I just hope they aren't planning "sexual tension" between Nichols and the new Captain, who is more his age than Burrows is. Who wants to see googly eyes between characters on LOCI? Way to light & fluffy for me.

I like MEM. Really loved her in the The Perfect Storm. Remember her from way back in Scarface, too. Too bad I'll have to wait for the DVD's.
The googly eyes won't be between MEM and Goldblum. They'll be coming at Burrows from all those "young males" that USA is trying to grab.

This sure won't be the Criminal Intent that attracted me in any way shape or form. I'd love to see her and JG and SB all dumped on the way you all dumped on VDO. Seems to be open season on only VDO from everything I've ever read on this board.

Like it or not, LOCI will never go back to its former glory, with or without VDO and KE.

I'd love to see her and JG and SB all dumped on the way you all dumped on VDO. Seems to be open season on only VDO from everything I've ever read on this board. I would like to gently disagree with you, Suzanne. Any criticisms by me regarding VDO were deserved. I don't see them as dumping on him, but since he has always been the primary reason that I watch the show, he has disappointed me often in his portrayal of Goren. He has also delighted me many times, even lately, and I've been quick to convey that excitement and the hope of more. Kate Erbe has never disappointed. She's maintained her character beautifully, and has only improved on and added depth to Det. Eames. Bravo to her! Same with Eric Bogosian, who was dumped on and criticized ruthlessly by many fans of the show. he's gotten better and better. And Jeff Goldblum? So far he has done an outstanding job. I probably won't dump on the new cast because I don't have my emotions invested. I will criticize if necessary, but they don't have my heart - not like VDO as Goren did. I'll be in mourning for Goren after the first episode, even if he isn't killed off. And hoping/praying for any guest appearances. I still love the character, even when I'm angry/disappointed in him. It's hard to explain.

I do agree that it's not good to dump on MEM simply because she's part of the replacement cast. I haven't done so, anyway.
I do not like her though, and that's from her role on Without a Trace. I just thought Anne was hugely annoying. The same goes for Saffron Burrows. I caught her on Boston Legal and she's just not my cup of tea. Maybe the two would surprise me if I were watching. I am not, but not because of them, but because of how VDO, KE and EB were treated.
