Very nicely said Johne I would have liked to have seen where Goren was in his life then with writers who knew that they only had 5 seasons to tell his story. I wonder could it have been done? Did you ever see the HBO miniseries Deadwood? The producers of that show originally were only going to write 4 seasons. Due to Production cost, it was finished off in 3 seasons, and viewers were left a bit unsatisfied with the ending. Would the same thing have happened to LOCI? Is there a TV series out there, where it was written, performed and completed to perfection, with out it being overdone?

but I also have some dim, foggy brain cell insisting that Jeff Goldblum was in the running and maybe William Peterson. - According to TV Guide's L&O special edition William Peterson was considered.

I've always thought Peterson's part in CSI, Gil Grissom, was a not as well written variant on Goren. Peterson did a great deal with that part. But, as a lot of people probably know, in the L&O vs. CSI debate, I'm squarely on the L&O side.

I still believe that and while their have been other memorable characters and of course the addition of the entire separate cast, the show was and is about Goren.
Wonderful post johne.
Quote: Patcat has it right. Additionally, VDO wasn't the first choice for Goren.
Quote Who?
If he wasn't who was? I thought that came from Dick Wolf himself.
I wasnt aware of it either, so could you please post the links to the articles on the "other actors" being considered for the role of Goren, (Patcat, Al, or DJ ) i would be interested to read them.

Caitlen, the most recent mention of other contenders for the job was in the 20th anniversary mothership TV Guide edition I own. There isn't a link, but here is the thread: 20th Anniversary L&OI'll try and find the issue. The various interviews mentioning Liev Schreiber are here on site somewhere, but they are old and are mixed around in various threads. Maybe someone else can find the mentions?

Thanks Maherjunkie – I’ll take your word for it as nothing seems to pass you by on matters relating to LO:CI!
I just remember Vincent stating that he was in talks regarding another television role but the character would be far removed from Robert Goren. Maybe he means that he will never take another lead role in a television series.

Do you have any detail on this new role? I'll defer to you on wayward popes!

No - it was just a vague response to a question. There again, I wouldn't expect Vincent to go into any detail at the negotiations stage.

Check the July archives at The Reel for those Paris interviews. It may have been during one of them...

...[H]is performance and dedication to his craft was something never experienced or witnessed on network television. For he is the Kwisatz Haderach (of network TV drama)! ;-) AL P.S. Patcat has it right. Additionally, VDO wasn't the first choice for Goren. Not that it matters anymore. If this actor can move on, why can't we? Network TV is suffering in their lack these days. Too bad they don't know a good thing when they have it. Saw the new pics, but no MEM yet.

I would like the link to this interview please.
I've read and listened to all Vincent's recent interviews but can't remember him making such a bold statement.
That is because it wasnt in a recent interview this year, as Maherjunkie would know.
