Another black hole has been discovered in the bleak cold emptiness of space that the new CI occupies. The inhabitants are even more diabolical and depraved than ever. If real detectives had to solve cases like this on a routine basis, no wonder their suicide rate is higher than the general population. People like Elvis and Dale would make even some of the strongest of those committed to serve and protect eat their guns.
Isn't the actor who plays Marcus Feingold, Det. Stevens' mentor from Chicago, a repeat offender, first seen in Legion?

Yes he was in Legion. Wasn't Elvis the actor (Chance Kelly) who played Charlie Hugo, the fireman who beat up Logan and helped solve the case in Maltese Cross?

This is Hammers idea of a blue sky approach? She wanted quirky but approachable characters, slightly flawed, well HELLO Bonnie, are you watching?

I've written before that I think the "fluff" is something that came more from lazy reporters discussing USA rather than the network.
This is clearly a very dark world, this "new" LOCI. There was much I liked about this episode, including the interplay between Nichols and Stevens; that the episode centered on Stevens; Saffron Burrows' performance; and the meticulous police work.
But, as I've felt with all of the episodes of this new season and team, something seems to be missing. Maybe I'm just having too much trouble letting go of Goren and Eames.

Some Shibboleth, a hint of False Hearted Judges and a little Wally Stevens makes a tasteless cocktail.
I'm with you Patcat. I think it may be the editing. I feel bounced around, back and forth from scene to scene. Then of course they have to throw in a little gratuitous sex (really, was the Catholic schoolgirl scene from last week's episode necessary?) Let's not forget the jerky camera and the thump-thump music.
I think the prison minister played the defense attorney in Crazy.

Yes he was in Legion. Wasn't Elvis the actor (Chance Kelly) who played Charlie Hugo, the fireman who beat up Logan and helped solve the case in Maltese Cross? Yes and yes, Leonore. And I thought it was interesting that the actor from "Legion" whose character in that episode lauded the philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, was named Marcus in this episode. A wink to the long time fans? Finally, some raw emotions from Burrows. Especially when she screamed at the perp to tell the truth about his role in the killing of the girl from Chicago. I do know that you never put meat, raw or cooked, in a compost pile. It smells vile and invites maggots galore. The scene of the girl's remains being wood chipped into the compost (Fargo, anyone) was especially gory and distasteful. I get the distinct impression that LOCI is trying to attract the SVU audience. As Moonbeam also noticed with the gratuitous sex scenes. Its annoying that LOCI doesn't even try to explain why Major Case is called in on a routine murder. Or why they are investigating a rape. Back in the day, the script would mention something like it's the Mayor's chauffeur who was murdered...yada yada.

MJ, yeah, yeah I know. But, I've only watched two episodes...because I enjoy a good train wreck as long as everyone walks away. The smelly bloody chest...Are you kidding me? Every one knows to store the dead body under the frozen leg of lamb and the rocky ripple ice cream.

Wasn't Elvis the actor (Chance Kelly) who played Charlie Hugo, the fireman who beat up Logan and helped solve the case in Maltese Cross? Aha! Thanks for that Lenore. The actor looked familiar but I couldn't make the connection.I thought it was interesting that the actor from "Legion" whose character in that episode lauded the philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, was named Marcus in this episode. A wink to the long time fans? I never cease to be amazed by the sharp eyes and minds of members of this board. Thanks for pointing out the Marcus connection DJ!The scene of the girl's remains being wood chipped into the compost (Fargo, anyone) was especially gory and distasteful. Option C in the episode poll! ;D
Despite this and the smelly chest scene--or perhaps because of them? --I was totally fascinated by this latest CI black hole, and the respective event horizons of Elvis and Dale.

Doh! I didn't notice your Fargo reference in the episode poll, Techguy. It's very clever! ;D I wonder how far they are going to go with this whole gory, sick, deranged slant for the show? Quite the polar opposite of what we were thinking in terms of "fluff." I hope USA knows what its doing.

This was the first episode this season that had me engaged and I actually found it very interesting. A bit of a hook to the story, focusing on Serena instead of Nicols, and fairly fast moving. Serena is starting to hold her own against Nicols, and the fact that they've given her the background out of New York and the belief in religion ("I'll have to answer to a higher power") is beginning to differentiate her from all the female detectives that have come before. For once I really was invested in the ending, wanting them to have executed the right guy, and thought that the way the story finally worked out was clever and covered all the angles.
That's not to say there weren't a few really silly bits - they wasted Marcus Feingold's appearance, really, his character had very little function in the plot and why wouldn't he have gone and thanked Nicols himself in the end?? He's a great actor when he has something to do. And Charlie, was he going to be the next disciple? Or was the fact that Dale was helping him just another example of how he really 'shouldn't' be a serial killer? And would Dale, who had killed so many people, really have bought the idea so quickly that he really wasn't meant to be a killer?
There seems to be a disturbing trend of people confessing really easily this season, as soon as Nicols starts questioning them, out it all flows! And as others have pointed out, the definition of a 'Major Case' seems to have changed somewhat. Still, I thought this episode was promising.
