What I liked best about this episode--F. Murray Abraham. Offsetting the creepiness of this episode and the very disturbed killer, Mr. Abraham's turn as Nichols' father makes we want to know more about his character and the antagonistic father/son relationship. I hope I get the chance to see more, assuming CI is renewed for another season.

I missed it ! Fell right dead asleep due to the heat about 5 minutes before it started.
I'll catch it in about a week .... Creepy is ok with me - many humans are really creepy .....

I agree, Techguy. Mr. Abraham was terrific, although far too young to be Mr. Goldblum's father. I also wondered what caused this terrible rift in the Nichols family. The elder Nichols was a bit detached and clinical, but also ethical, smart, good at his job, and funny. I found myself wondering if the younger Nichols might be more at fault in this rift. Maybe that mysterious older brother had something to do with it.
The dynamics of the Nichols family was a lot more interesting than the crime and the criminal. The actor playing the criminal was believable as the painter and the little boy, but he didn't seem disturbing and powerful enough for the doctor.
Not bad. Not great. Not what I'd want from what I fear may be the last new episode of LOCI.

Just finished watching it - and I really liked it. Yes, F. Murray was fantastic as Nichol's Dad. He isn't old enough (or is Goldblum too old?) but it didn't affect his believability to me. I can imagine that he was an OK guy to his colleagues and strangers, but was a very cold, critical father to Zack and his brother. He couldn't even admit at the end that Zack had done a good job, even though his actions spoke otherwise. As an adult Zack can distinguish his father's actions vs. words, but children can't. Like Techguy, I hope we can learn more about the Nichols family - even meet Mom. This episode was a good season finale. I just hope they decide to replace Saffron Burrows. She's so boring.

I don't think Ms. Burrows is boring. I think she doesn't have a great deal to play yet. And, sadly, may not get the chance. I like her more the more I see of her.

The rift between Zach and his father is puzzling to me too. Sure, Dad disapproved when Son chose a police career over Dad's wish that Zach join him in the medical profession. But is this enough to cause all the hostility, resentment, and antagonism Zach displayed and talked about over the course of this season?
There was mention of Dad saying he wished Zach invited him to see him play piano and Zach replied that he did but "you were in Zurich." Is that it? Dad was absent and not involved in Son's interests? Is the older brother favored because he did follow family tradition and become a doctor?
Based on Dad's statement about how he and Zach have been to Lourdes--suggesting a miracle--and their meeting in the deli at the end of this episode, there is a suggestion of a thaw in their relationship. I really hope I get the chance to see this explored further next season, which is why I'm keeping my fingers crossed that CI somehow gets renewed. I want to see F. Murray Abraham again.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. It was the best Nichols episode of the season, mostly because of the great F. Murray Abrams. Whoever gave this role to Mr. Abrams deserves kudos. I also liked that Zach was more relaxed and having fun, like he did last season. I was having thoughts of a Nichols father and son team with a new show title.
