About the end of it, when Goren is in the car and he says to the guy that he has no idea of how it feels, the guy says "son of a b..." and Goren repeats "you have no idea". Do you think he was still talking about the feeling of being in that car or he was replying that 'son of 'comment? I vote for the second. I like to think Det. Goren was giving Roger a double whammy insult with the "you have no idea" remark. Roger has no idea what it would feel like to sit in the Cherry Red Ferrari FIRST because Goren conveniently denied him that orgasmic rush. But Roger also has no idea what an SOB Goren can be or to what lengths Goren will go to seduce and trap a suspect. Roger got a bitter taste, on his level, with the Ferrari--but is nowhere near knowing or understanding what Goren is REALLY capable of.

That was my take on it exactly - that it did cover both aspects and that Goren was underscoring he (Goren) could have made it much worse - or had done much worse to get his man.

I recently rewatched Cherry Red, one of my favorite episodes. I asked myself: Did anyone ever ruin my birthday completely? One of my younger brothers got spanked on his birthday, but it was still a nice birthday. I think, that no birthday of mine was ever ruined by a big disappointment like Roger Coffman's. What he did was evil, the frauds as well as the "wet work" (a Polish expression for murder), but I understand his big disappointment. The other things the older Coffman did to his son were also very ugly, but the thing I understand most is the disappointment over the 12-piece Ferrari.

I think the whole episode was a dig at men with small penises. He was emasculated and not even by a woman but by his own dad. The cars are an extension of that (bad pun, sorry) and something he could never have no matter how much growing up he did. (Another bad pun, sorry.)

This is one of my all time favorite episodes too for so many reasons, but I'm going to go slightly off-topic. I was going to comment on the father/son also having been the father/son in the movie "Breaking Away", and saw where a fellow Hoosier had mentioned it. There are very few movies made here in Indiana, so they stick in our minds. For those who haven't seen it, it was filmed in Bloomington in the 70s on the Indiana University campus and is about the "Little 500" bicycle race. Dennis Quaid is also in it, and its worth the watch if you can catch it some time but man they look sooooo YOUNG. (which especially bothers me since I was young very young when this movie came out)

Sobergal;
I'm so old I was in Bloomington when BREAKING AWAY was filmed there (g).
I really enjoyed this bit of casting in CHERRY RED.

The episode title combined with the "you have no idea" orgasmic rush statement is one of the best, if not THE best, suggestions of how fast cars and sex are entwined. Goren "deflowers" the prize Ferrari in Roger's presence, further emasculating and humiliating him in ways Roger's father could only dream of. This scene is the defining moment of the episode, setting up the final interrogation room confrontation of both father and son. It is also one of the main reasons why this episode is one of my all-time favorite CI episodes.

Very good episode. Watch Carver and Goren when they are fascinated from the cars. Roger performed from Dennis Christopher played also in one of my favourite horror movies Stephen King's "It".
