The five finalists should include selections recommended by more than one participant, so the original four are still in. I'd prefer the fifth choice to have broad appeal, and hope someone will pick a movie that has already been mentioned to complete the list. There's a few more days left, so...the option for #5 is still open.

Sunset Blvd was already mentioned Yes it was Cassie, I didn't scroll back far enough in the thread so I missed it.
LOCIfan, if possible I'd like for you to have some say in determining the finalists too. I'm keeping the original four because at least three people mentioned them on their lists. Considering the additional criteria of broad appeal, are you OK with either Sunset Boulevard or The Grapes of Wrath to round out the five finalists? If so, which one would you pick?

How about Sunset Boulevard? It's a great one (even though it's another Wilder film).
Thanks again for doing all this, Techguy. And best wishes on a good outcome with your wife's biopsies.

I think we have a shortlist! How about setting up a poll on the poll thread and we all have a week to vote?
And the Oscar goes to...

I'm going to waive the non-Billy Wilder criteria because SB is the only other film mentioned by more than one member. The poll Movie Night Picks is going up in a separate thread in Film Talk.

I was reading that Teresa Wright passed away on Sunday. One film that's fantastic is The Best Years of Our Lives. I first saw that decades ago on late night TV. Rest in Peace, Ms. Wright. Excellent film. I'm glad I had a box of tissues with me. When I tried to think of my favorite B&W movie, I came up with two or three. After I started reading the posts here, the number kept growing. But, I'll just mention my originals: The Best Years of Our Lives I Was A Male War Bride Philadelphia Story

The "Astaire & Rogers...", "Bing Crosby..." and "Thin Man..." collections are quite tempting

Hint, hint, Nikki. Even if it doesn't end up under the tree, you should treat yourself.

I would think this movie was probably an inspiration to at least a few of the Criminal Intent writers and maybe even it's creators. Check out the reference to the use of the word "panties." Makes me think of Goren use of the word several times in the episode SHIBBOLETH in season 4.
Anatomy of a Murder
Reviews Barnes & Noble Stylish, sophisticated, and as supremely adult as only an Otto Preminger film can be, Anatomy of a Murder is both a murder mystery and a densely textured courtroom drama. Its complex, compelling protagonists are motivated by emotions ranging from passion to self-loathing, weakness to rage. As a country lawyer defending a GI who killed his wife's alleged rapist, Jimmy Stewart delivers a richly layered performance. Special notice also goes to George C. Scott, who plays a big-time prosecutor from the city; his performance in the film's penultimate scene is particularly memorable. Set in a small town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Anatomy succeeds in transposing the urban genre of film noir to this folksy setting. The visuals often have a dark, shady ambiance, and everyone from the soldier's fun-loving wife to the lawyer's snappy secretary (marvelously portrayed by Lee Remick and Eve Arden, respectively) fits snugly into noir's cast of archetypes. Yet the sharp and witty script (which actually marked the first time, post-code, that the word "panties" was heard on screen) delivers surprise after surprise. Karen Backstein

Hint, hint, Nikki. Even if it doesn't end up under the tree, you should treat yourself. ;D I might, if it wasn't for the fact that I just picked up a "few" sets already. To name some... As Time Goes By (complete series); The Magnificient Seven (S1); Facts of Life (S1/S2); Stargate SG-1 (S9); The Closer (S1); Reba (S4)... I should at least open those before I buy anymore, eh?!
