Great suggestions, Techguy!
My pick out of the three would be for SOME LIKE IT HOT, as I haven't seen it in a good long time. With THE PHILADELPHIA STORY a hot second and IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT a sorta distant third place pick (aside from a few classic moments, I find the movie ponderously slow and not "screwbally" at all).
One other suggestion from the screwball camp -- MY MAN GODFREY.
But whatever we decide on, I'll be happy to watch and will certainly add my two cents to the discussion!

p.s. Techguy, sorry for the belated thanks, but I wanted to let you know that because of your earlier reminders, I now have THE GRAND ILLUSION on tape. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I'd tend to go for Some Like it Hot ...... I haven't seen any Monroe movies, have heard a ton about it, Robert Palmer sang a song called this - so it tops my list. Still, I'll go for what the majority want to see.
O.T. snicker at work, at lunch, co-worker says can you believe my cousin is in a Book Club! the horror was evident in her voice. Now, this is going to sound judgemental because it is .... but this from a nut that did drugs, lies, grumps around and complains all day, yells at her kids, talks about the housewife show like the people are real .... I could go on. I think she NEEDS a book club! Just thought of that, since we are in a B&W club, it seems.

[snicker!] I haven't seen "Some Like it Hot" or "The Philadelphia Story" in some time. I can go either way with that! I don't really want to see "It Happened One Night" again. As LOCIfan stated -- slow. Now, on the other hand, "My Man Godfrey" is a great one.

Nikki, I'm a big fan of screwball comedies, and "It Happened One Night" is often referred to as the first of the genre but, to me, it's not screwbally at all because it lacks the sort of manic quality that movies like "Bringing Up Baby" and "My Man Godfrey" have. I enjoy both Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, but that movie just doesn't do it for me...

Way to go, LOCIfan. And you're welcome.
Based on the posts in reply to my movie suggestions, it seems either "Some Like It Hot or "The Philadelphia Story" will be our next movie to discuss. "Some Like It Hot" has a slight edge, so unless anyone has another suggestion, that just might be the one. The only other thing left to do is decide on a time for viewing and start of the discussion, which I assume will get its very own thread.

Seems as though we have a concensus. Why don't we go with "Some Like It Hot" as the official pick...
I'll try to watch it next weekend. Fun!

I also love to see MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE. Another fave of mine, again with Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas is THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES.

I also love to rewatch MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE. One of the laughs I enjoy from the movie is the worry about costs for building the dream house. Of course, everything is relative to the times. Don't we wish those prices prevailed today? Another fave of mine, again with Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas is THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES.
Question about THE THIN MAN: That stars Myna Loy and William Powell, and not William Holden?
It's been so long since I've seen CITIZEN KANE that I might as well say I've never seen it although I remember "Rosebud," which often appears as a solution to a crossword clue.
Good idea. What's the first movie?

"Some Like it Hot" sounds good--have not seen that one, although I did catch the "Hercules" spoof/tribute. (My good roommate last year liked SciFi as background noise.) We just need to pick a "View By" date.
Suggestions for future picks: (these are actors I like, work is kind of spotty and I'm too brain dead to think of specific films): Lon Chaney, Boris Karloff (and all the old Universal horror flicks), Peter Lorre. Perhaps we ought to start separate threads for Silent and Foreign selections?

js, Yes, THE THIN MAN is Myrna Loy and William Powell (not Holden). And, in my opinion, it's the very best of the entire series. It's a lovely movie. I agree with you about THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES. It's on my Top 10 list.
As for a "View By" date for SOME LIKE IT HOT -- what do people think of two weeks? Is that too long, too short?

Two weeks will work for me ..... I'll try to get it in this weekend - first one done with the homework can start the thread & we can jump on as we view the film.

I'll go along with the two weeks time frame also, since it might take me that long to log back in to this site. Eh, since the "upgrade" there have been waaaaaay too many "Too Many Connections" messages to suit my taste.
Whoops, I got carried away. This isn't the gnashing of teeth thread.

Bela Lugosi movies always spark my interest. He did quite well as Count Dracula until he was type-cast and couldn't get other roles. He ended up making "Abbot and Costello" type movies to make a living, became addicted to drugs, and died destitute in 1956.
Also, maybe I'm totally off target, and it's been so long since I watched ED WOOD, but didn't the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE guy - forgot his name - play Lugosi in that film?
As to ED WOOD, I read that someone else actually did the voice for VDO's Orson Welle's part. Anyone have confirmation of that?
