I've posted this under the Vincent d'Onofrio column as well, but it seemed appropriate here as well (moderator, please punish me if needed).
Turner Classic Movies will show Orson Welles' films on Wednesdays in May. The TCM site (tcm.org) has some great features on Welles and his films. I'm looking forward to seeing some films I've never seen. I'm hoping JANE EYRE is one of them--he's an intriguing Mr. Rochester.

Have you read the book "Jane Eyre"? They COMPLETELY screwed it up!!! I was not impressed with Welles as Mr. Rochester, Helen was aggravating, as Jane was so whispery that I have no memory of her performance. And they left out about 2/3 of the book!! This was oen fo those films where I was throwing pillows and socks at the screen, much to my father's amusement.
I highly reccomend the BBC version from 1984. Timothy Dalton (while technically too handsome for the role) was much better in terms of character for Mr. Rochester. Unfortunately I don't think it's on DVD, I've only seen the double cassette version. Very thorough, it only leaves out certain bits with St. John, the performances are very good.
So I'm overprotective of my Brontes. I read "Jane Eyre" at age 13 and that will warp a teenage girl quicker than anything. Chick lit it may be, but at least Charlotte and Anne had smart characters and cool females. (Not so big on "Wuthering Heights", Emily was just plain weird.) That's where "Janet" comes from in my screen name--Mr. Rochester's pet name for Jane Eyre.
Rant aside, I would like the chance to see some of Welles' films. I know who he is, but aside from the poopy Jane Eyre and his cameo in "The Muppett Movie" I have not watched any of his films.
Later all, Catbird

F IS FOR FAKE will be on TCM on Monday, May 22 at 9:30 pm.
I'm currently reading the first volume of the British actor Simon Callow's biography of Welles, THE ROAD TO XANADU. It takes Welles up to and through the making of CITIZEN KANE. Very well-written and researched.
Story: Welles was so much in demand as a radio performer in the mid and late 1930s--and needed the money so much--that he often performed the script cold without seeing it before the show. During a commercial during one show he turned to another performer and said, "This is pretty good. I can't wait to see how it'll turn out."
