Yes, it's a documentary. Yes, it's a documentary about penguins. Yes, it's a documentary about penguins made by French filmmakers. But it's wonderful. One of the most beautiful, moving films I've seen in a very long time. And it should be seen on a big screen.
My 8-year-old friend Zach was mesmerized by it. His 4-year-old sister Anna got into it once once little penguins appeared.

Yes, someone else mentioned this to me today as well.
French documentaries on animals are surprisingly well-made, aren't they? There was one called "Microcosme" a while back. With one of the most erotic (I kid you not) sex scenes of two tree slugs mating.

I saw it last night Morgan Freeman narrated it. It was wonderful. I always thought Penguins where just cute little adorable animals in tuxedo's. Little did I realize what hard lives they live. It should be shown at all parenting classes.

I rented this to view over the holiday weekend and I highly recommend it also. The photography is awesome, and the story of the year in the life of the Emperor penguin is absolutely mind-boggling. The resilience of these creatures has to be seen to be believed! The dedication and devotion of the penguin parents put to shame the actions of some human parents who are too "busy" with their own lives to get involved with their children.
Emperors rock! Go Crittercam!

I still highly recommend this film, and gave it as a present this year, but I've read several reports that the French version of this film had French actors doing voiceovers of penguins' thoughts. The reports indicated that the penguins apparently thought just like French pseudo-intellectuals.

I haven't seen this yet. They had a Penguin documentary on Discovery and it was too cute! I've been meaning to rent this since I know I'll like it.
Just editing to say that I bought the DVD and watched the Extra stuff on there fisrt than got around to the actual movie this morning since I am holed up in my apartment with a bad cold.
It was so cute!! Sad at times but so cute! I loved how they show the babies bloated full of food when the fathers come back to feed them. They were all so fat and looking like they couldn't move or something.
I was afraid they were going to show Leapord seals attacking them like they do in the specials but thankfuly they didn't.

I just saw a show on the Animal Planet Channel, called "City Slickers". It's the story of Marlo and Henry, and their baby Hugo. Africian Penquins that live on the coast of Boulders Beach, South Africa. They, along with the rest of their tribe, swim and bath on the beaches with the rest of the natives of the town. It was an exciting story to see how the penquins co-exist with the human population. Hiding under cars in garages, or sneaking in the back doors of homes. Penquins have the right away, when crossing streets. When tragedy attacked the Penquin Community, with an oil spill. It was neat to see how they trust the people to take care of them and the situation for them.

I have yet to see it, but I do have the soundtrack to the original french version of it by Emilie Simon. I highly recommend that.

The soundtrack and the movie are both wonderful - it's fun to watch at any time of year, but I find that they both especially fit the winter season .
