It's a beautiful movie. Has anyone seen it?

I have! And I agree, it was a very beautiful film.
I felt it was quite a good reflection of the book. They obviously had to leave some things out, but overall it kept the feel of the book.
The only real exception to that was Hatsumomo. I'm curious as to why they chose to make her a more sympathetic character in the movie than she was portrayed in the book; I haven't been able to puzzle that out.

This was a beautiful movie but a bit vapid for me. I see best cinematography in its future but not much else.
It was kind of like a bunch of girls sitting around saying: "I should get the guy because I'm more beautiful than you, " w :'(hich in 19th Century Japan (or 19th century anywhere for that matter) was probably the most power a woman had. Still leaves a certain emptiness which, with even as much cinematographic beauty as this movie had, could not quite dispell.

Not bad, but a definite chick flick.
ZYZ wasn't bad in this flick, usually she has a superior princess like attitude in her roles that gets annoying fast. I loved the part where she gets crabs. ha!

This is a pretty movie, but I loved the book... so I was bound to be disappointed, I guess.
My real problem was with the main character. First (and most shallowly) off, I hated how skinny she was. Her face looked gaunt, and seriously, I was so busy being grossed out I was distracted through the whole movie.
Also, she never seemed to have any kind of verve, which I found stereotypical of the setting/asian women in general... but I think that the book went against that stereotype, and made that character smart and fairly willful.
I guess that was my problem- a movie needs a willful main character to create good momentum, and the way this character was portrayed, she was just plain too passive to work. Hence the movie feeling ten years long.

untitled; it looks like VDO has blood coming out of his eyes in your icon ... is it an odd icon - or is my color monitor going bazirk? - I modified it's color curves. It wasn't the intended effect, I hadn't even noticed that until you mentioned it.
