I saw this yesterday and I was not expecting this movie to be so good. I have to say, it's a leading contender in my books for this year's academy.

I saw it with a friend to drug me to it claiming that I just *Had* to see it (actually, she'll see anything with Heath Ledger in it). I liked it, but not the ending, they never could get comfortable enough in their own skins to seek out one another & finally have a chance at happiness, what a miserable life. Was it a good movie? Yes, do I think that it deserves to win best pic? No. There are plenty of other good contenders (Memiors of a Geisha, , Munich etc...).

I couldn't stop thinking about it afterwards either. I really liked Jake Gyllenhal's character.
Kawaiidragonfoe: While I thought it was a legitimate fear that living together would be asking for a lynching, I thought Jake's character was quite comfortable seeking out love and his personality really needed to connect but Heath Ledger's character was different. He was more comfortable alone than with people. He didn't even want his daughter to live with him. They were different personalities who couldn't really come to terms with each other but couldn't leave each other either. To me, that's why they didn't end up together. I felt sad for for all the time Jake spent alone and hoping!

I wonder if it would've won best picture over "Crash" if it was a love story between man and woman???
I never got to see it on big screen. A friend went to see it twice and he said 98 Percent of the audience was women.

I don't know, but lately I have turned against the unrequited love story - too sad and damn it, just wrong. So I won't see it just because they decide not to try it out.

I would like to see this movie. I asked a friend to go with me. and she said no. not because its a gay love story. but because one of the men leaves his wife in the movie for another lover. not because the lover was another man, but because the marriage was destroyed. I still want to see the movie. looks like a modern western to me too

I actually saw a bit of myself in Heath Ledger's character (I'm sorry but his namesake escapes me at the moment, I only saw the movie once), it seems as though he just might be suffering from schizoid personality disorder.

Is it just me, or is this film a bit on the same lines as Mr. D'Onofrio's film DESIRE?

Patcat>> Now that I think about it, you're right! Imagine that. Perhaps they saw Desire & decided to make a gay-targeted version?
