I finally got to see this film, and enjoyed it a great deal. But a caveat--if you don't like Robert Altman films, or if you don't like the radio program PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION, I doubt you will like this film. I could have done without the Angel of Death subplot--although Virginia Madsen is so beautiful and touching that she almost makes the afterlife an appealing prospect--and the plot is wafer thin. But you get to spend two hours with a lot of flawed but funny and friendly people--the film doesn't really have a mean bone in its body. It has a great cast, and everyone is terrific. I've never seen Lindsay Lohan in anything else--I'm not in her target audience--but she's wonderful. Meryl Streep is great and shows off a solid singing voice.
I was worried when I heard Robert Altman was directing this film--I thought he wouldn't get PHC. But he did, and while I wouldn't argue this is his greatest film, it's awfully good.
