I watched this on AMC last night . . . spoilers will follow ....
I actally was smiling as the ending credits rolled - I was kind of surprised at that.
I heard the acting was over the top, but I really didn't find that - a loney old prospector would be prone to that kind of behavior. Bogart was maybe a little over the line with the facial expressions - so was that the acting or directing?
Anyway - great story and I found I was quoting one of my favorite lines wrong!
... "badges? we don't need to show no stinking badges!" Ah, after decades of whipping out that quote - I have finally seen the movie.
I have to say I really like the community - poor, but grouping together to fight the banditos! and common theives. Now that is how a group handles ruffians.
I thought there would be one bag left unbroken - and a final scene at the orchard - I thought this as I watched - but I am really glad there was not.

Did you recognize Robert Blake as the paper boy who sells the winning lottery ticket to the Humphrey Bogart character? Nearly 20 years later, Blake's character in "In Cold Blood" mentions TTOTSM in the scene where he and his fugitive partner pick up an old man and a young boy on their way to Las Vegas.
BTW, the "Badges" quote was voted #36 on the all-time top 100 movie quotes list by the American Film Institute.
