I always regard it as an event when I get to see an Orson Welles film I've never seen before. Yesterday evening I viewed the film MR. ARKADIN (also known as CONFIDENTIAL REPORT) thanks to Turner Classic Movies.
It's a frustrating film, made during the period when Welles started and didn't finish many projects, and suffering from its limited budget and resources. Welles appeared to be trying to make an international thriller along the lines of THE THIRD MAN, and this film simply didn't have it. But there's enough there to make it an intriguing and watchable film. Welles plays the title role encased in a wig and beard that makes him look like a devilish Santa Claus, but if one can get past that he gives a subtle and moving performance. There are also good performances from several of the European actors, although the American playing the romantic lead is, well, bad is the word.
But it's a fascinating film, and I'd urge all Welles fans to see it.
