TCM seems to be having a minifestival of Orson Welles movies at the dinner hour this week. This is another of Welles' films from late in his career, and it's a strange mixture of documentary and dramatic film. It begins as a study of an art forger and Clifford Irving (the man who engineered the Howard Hughes autobiography hoax), and turns into a meditation on art, fame, lies, magic, and hoaxes, with some Welles autobiography thrown in. The film was produced at the same time Irving's "biography" of Hughes appeared, and that adds an even stranger layer to the proceedings.
It's a very odd but strangely entertaining film, with Welles enjoying the role of magician. Stick with it, and you'll be the beneficiary of one of the great jokes of film.
