Gosh, I hope I spelled that somewhere close (g).
I celebrated the Fourth of July by watching this film. And I stress "Celebrate". A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining film. Comparisons with THE INCREDIBLES, Brad Bird's wonderfuly film of a couple of years ago, are probably inevitable, and it's true that RATATOUILLE doesn't hit with so much surprise. It's also a more understated film, and many of the superb animated effects are more subtle. It's sweet without being sickening; charming without being cloying. A couple of the sequences offer remarkably terrifying views of what it's like to be a very small rodent in a very big world. The characters--rodent and human--are some of the most well-written and performed creatures I've come across in some time. (Particularly the nasty food critic Anton Ego, wonderfully animated by the film's vast crew and voiced by Peter O'Toole.)
I don't want to over sell this movie--it's gentle and understated in many ways, and doesn't pound you over the head.
And, yes, the site of so many rats so close to so much food did give me pause. But you get used to it. Besides, Remy, the rodent hero of the film, is absolutely scrupulous about cleanliness.

I absolutely loved this movie - I saw it this weekend (along with Transformers - suspending reality a bit longer until next weekend when I think I'll try to go and see Sicko).
The animation was superb and the story was, I agree, more gentle and "subtle" but certainly no less powerful. The movie set out to tell a good story, and I feel that's what it accomplished without muddying it up along the way. I'm always impressed by the small touches that the animators add and by the amount of work that goes in to really getting things to look "just right".
I also love the whole message the film was sending about creative pursuits. What a wonderful movie!

Bought this one on DVD also. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The old lady with the shotgun was hysterical.
