The great film director Ingemar Bergman died yesterday at the age of 89. One of the most prolific, varied and gifted filmmakers, Mr. Bergman directed all types of movies, but was best known for his emotionally devestating depictions of relationships and the fear of death.
Mr. Bergman is responsible for one of my least pleasant experiences in a movie theater--FACE TO FACE, where Liv Ullman plays a psychiatrist suffering her own breakdown--and one of my favorites--the semi-autobiographical FANNY AND ALEXANDER.
