An A upon one viewing. Nice plot twists. Would have liked to have seen Gaffigan in a better role, maybe the killer for once? But things like that last scene between Goren & Eames bother me. That last exchange is a D in my book.

I agree, DonnaJo. I don't know how to grade this one because of that last exchange. As I said in the episode thread, it feels like they're bent on destroying the soul of the show, which is the Goren-Eames partnership.

Watched this one last night with a 'casual' LOCI watcher who LOVED it. But then he didn't know anything about Nelda or Necedrol or even 'Dead' (I just can't help it, when I see Jim Gaffigan that's I can think of is "repositioning" ewww...) Even so, for the most part I was into the story. Although my big question all along was, Is Goren 'playing' Leslie or not??? I'm still not sure, even after reading the episode thread.
About the last exchange between Goren and Eames, I don't think they're out to destroy the soul of the show, I think they're just trying to reposition it.... and that still makes me want to say "ewww". But it had my friend saying, I'd have to remind him to watch the show next week - although I automatically said, "in two weeks" - I totally think of it as two separate shows now, alternating weeks. I just happen to watch both shows.

I did like the acting in this episode. I agree, until the mouth wash poisoning became apparent, Goren and Eames wouldn't have been assigned to the dentist murder. However, I do remember in the episode Silver Lining, that they took the case because they were on "street watch" or something of that nature.
Having been around someone who is mentally ill, the actress actually did a very refined job. She showed that she was off in her behaviors, but that the illness and death of her child brought her to that point. Based on what the teen said about her, that she's always talking to herself, showed that she was already suffering from a mental illness, but she was able to care for her children to a certain degree (she took her son the the ER). His death sent her into a full blown episode.
I guess when you've been on for 7 years, and have two other sister shows, there's only so many types of villains that the show can reflect. What I didn't like and agree with other posters is the gratuitous nature of the Leslie relationship and the ending. Now Leslie could have researched Goren, he's been involved in many high profile cases. However, out of 7 years there would only be a few that were negative.
I know VDO and Erbe want this story line, so I'm trying to accept it, but it's not easy. The Goren that rocket my sole, was the one of the first three years. He had friends in NY and all over the world in high level positions. He played poker with his friends, had nice girlfriends, was confident in himself, etc. I know people change as life takes it's toll on you, but to me they shifted him 180 when I think 90 degrees would have been more palatable.
As I've already stated, I hated the ending between Goren and Eames. I agree with the poster that said if she wanted to be Captain and passed the test, with her record, and being a female, she's get a post. This same story line was reflected in the "X" files with Scully. She' s the Doctor who had a brilliant career ahead of her but becomes "spooky" Mulder's partner. She's never given the level of respect that she would have, if she had a different partner.
Again, I guess the writers re-use relationships because you either hate your partner, love your partner, or trust and respect one another as partners, but have outside lives not associated with their job. I think Goren and Eames are the last type, but the writers are trying to be more dramatic with it. Personally, I wish they wouldn't as this dynamic is one of the reason the show is different from other "cop" shows. They're both caring, dedicated individuals, who love their job and just want to do good.

"Leapin' Lizard" would have been a better title for this one. I'm not sure about the title, "Smile." Anyone?

I'm not sure about the title, "Smile." Anyone? The most obvious connection is to the dentist angle, how dentistry can improve the smile of patients with orthodonture and other techniques. However, after seeing the final scene between Goren and Eames, the episode title can refer to the song originally used in the soundtrack for the 1936 Charlie Chaplin movie "Modern Times." Chaplin composed the music, the lyrics were written by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons. The song was recorded by Nat King Cole and has been covered by numerous artists since:Smile, though your heart is aching. Smile, even though it's breaking. Though there are clouds in the sky, you get by...
If you smile through your fears and sorrows. Smile and maybe tomorrow You'll see the sun come shining through.
If you just light up your face with gladness, Hide every trace of sadness. Although a tear may be ever, ever so near.
That's the time you must keep on trying. Smile, what's the use of crying? You'll find life is worthwhile If you'll just smile, come on and smile.
If you just smile.

I voted D. I really would rather have a root canal than watch this again. At least with a root canal I'd get good drugs - which is what I felt I needed after hearing Eames final comment.

I voted an A for this episode. The last comments made question it, but the more I have thought about it the more I think it wasn't meant in a negative way. I also don't think that they are trying to destroy the soul of the show. I guess we will just have to wait 2 weeks to find out for sure.
