When a judge's son is found dead in front of the courthouse with a mysterious playing card on the body, Logan and Wheeler investigate. Evidence initially points toward a rapper sentenced by the judge, and members of the rapper's entourage including a DJ at a night club where the dead boy had gone the night of his death. Suspicion also falls on the dead boy's friends who give conflicting statements about their whereabouts and activities the night the judge's son died.
The night club's owner gives one of the detectives a possible lead in a personal matter that has been troubling the detective since childhood. This information leads the detective to discover some unsettling and disturbing information about a family member's business activities that could have been responsible for this person's sudden disappearance 20 years ago.
Ballistics testing results on the bullet recovered from the body of the judge's son point in another more disturbing direction for explaining how and why the boy died. Further investigation into the significance of the playing card leads the detectives to conclude that family ties and allegiances, for both the judge and his best friend, are the "wild cards" in unraveling the mystery of what happened to the judge's son.
Family ties and allegiances also come into play for one of the detectives, as some questions are answered and others remain an unsettling and disturbing mystery.
