Some of the discussion of WANT brought a question to my mind--
Do others think that the victims are occasionally lost in LOCI? That perhaps the complexity of the plots, the attention paid to the criminals' motivations, and to Goren cause viewers to, well, not forget about them, but to place them somewhat out of mind? And does this happen to the detectives, particularly Goren?

I think that the victims are generally lost in the public mind - after all, they are dead and can't do sound bites or tearful interviews. L&O as a rule, does better by the victims than say, the normal news stations.
But I can see your point. CI is based on getting into the criminal's mind (or intent) so that we understand their motivations and "walk in their shoes" something that Goren is gifted at. It may give him more empathy for the criminal, particularly for the mentally ill, but I don't think he loses sight of the victims.
I just wish we'd get more "gotcha!" from him. I'm not that comfortable with him over identifying w/the perpetrators.

I think the mothership does this as well, not as often as CI but on occassion. We laugh about the L&O twist, but honestly, things get so convoluted by the time they're cuffing the criminal in CI I'm thinking "What was it he did? How did they link her to the victim?" things like that. Flad to know it's not just me, I thought I was just showing my blonde!
Goren doesn't loose sight of the victim's, they're the ones who fuel his righteous anger. I've said elsewhere that while Goren has always been more people centered, Eames is a typical cop with her this-crime-deserves-punishment moral outlook, most likely inherited from her Dad. While she may not forget the victims she's much more likely to focus on procedure and the investigation.

I don’t think Goren looses track of the victims, though I don’t think the writers are quite as aware of showing us that now as they were earlier on. I still remember, in a first season episode, perhaps Enemy Within, someone referred to two families being affected, and Goren said, “three,” remembering the ‘incidental’ death of a maid in another part of the building, which hadn’t been referred to since early in the first act. Janetcatbird, I’m presuming you’re blonde, and so feel okay about referring to ‘showing my blonde.” I, on the other hand, am brunette (my, what an elegant-sounding word for medium-brown-starting-to-go-gray ). However, I’ve known a couple of blondes who were really, really tired of the ‘dumb blonde’ mythos being endlessly perpetuated; and I myself just have a ‘thing’ about any group of people being dissed on the basis of race, creed, or color of hair. I know it was just a little self-deprecating humor... but I just needed to say that that kind of thing makes me uncomfortable.

Yes, Observer, I am a blonde (and natural!). When I was younger I'd really freak out about the jokes. Nowadays I can laugh at myself being flaky--if I do say so myself, it's a rare occurrence, which is why I can laugh. But if any of my dark-haired friends make a crack it takes an effort not to bite their head off. Although being a blonde southerner I do get annoyed with stereotypes, so I appreciate your being considerate like that.
Boy, i've given you a bunch to talk about, haven't I? Thanks for putting up with my ramblings.

I think the victims are treated with concern in this show - but I use ONE as the standard to gauge what the concept of the show began as ....... The parents of the murdered kids were given much concern by Goren ect but the show still was able to delve deeply into the mind of the bad guy ..... I want more of that.
Like everything we see touched on in CI but not highlighted - they touch on it so we know it is part of the story; but due to time, can't go into so I assume they leave it to our understanding of the nature of things that victims are reviewed, families talked to much more than is shown.
I could go for a 4 hour CI every Sunday to show it all ..... I think the actors would protest a little.
