Some speculations on my part on Goren so far in the fourth season:
I'm beginning with the large assumption that the events of the POSTHUMOUS COLLECTION occurred first, followed by GREAT BARRIER. I believe that the NYPD requires that all police action shootings be investigated, and that while that investigation takes place the involved officer is assigned desk duty. Goren might have taken advantage of the time to also take some vacation (he might have even have been encouraged to do so by Deakins). He engages in some soul searching, doesn't go to the barber for a few weeks, and returns just in time to catch the case in WANT, and the case unfortunately casts reflections on some of the issues Goren is trying to deal with in his own life. (I'm not arguing that Goren identifies with Tagman, or even sees himself as a potential Tagman, but rather that Goren sees parallels in his loneliness and Tagman's.) Goren, and Eames, are both still dealing with the fallout from WANT when the events depicted in SEMI-DETACHED occur. Goren is still depressed, angry, and confused over Nicole and Tagman, and it's one reason he allows himself to slip in his relationship with Nelda. Eames, who was in a difficult position in WANT, where she was torn between wanting to support her partner and her own feelings regarding the case, isn't quite as quick with her support as she usually is.
Now, all of this has more holes than a good chunk of Swiss cheese. But I do think Goren is showing signs of depression (and I've always thought he's far more at danger of developing that rather than schizophrenia).
So, am I off base?
