I watched a bit of the premiere of the new edition of KOJACK this weekend, partly out of an affection for the old version of this show and out of admiration for Ving Rhames. By the end of the pilot Kojack had a girlfriend, was helping to take care of two kids, the audience had learned his father was a jazz musician and had been killed in a robbery, etc. In two hours, the audience learned more about Kojack than it learned about Lennie Briscoe in 11 seasons.
It seems to me that the powers that be at LOCI have found something of a happy medium. We've learned just enough about Eames, and especially Goren, to make them intriguing characters, but not so much as to make them predictable or saddle them with too much baggage. The gaps in our knowledge of Goren and Eames allow us to have these debates about them and to speculate as to why they are what they are and what they do. And it also lets TPTB play with our heads--I sometimes wonder if Rene Balcer and his staff are chuckling to themselves as they come up with another hint at the Goren/Eames puzzle. "Yea, let's see what they think of this!"
Just some ramblings.

Does this Kojak say "Who loves ya, baby?" too?
And keep a lollipop in his mouth?

Didn't catch any "Who loves ya..." but the lollipop is ever present. The cast, especially Rhames, is good, but I doubt I'm going to make an effort to watch it.
